R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The passing of Dr. Elton R. Miles on May 15, 1995, 1-2 at the age of 77, brought a great loss to the family and friends of 1-3 this distinguished man; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Born on May 25, 1917, in Coryell, Dr. Miles was a 1-5 well-known folklorist who served as professor emeritus of English 1-6 at Sul Ross State University; he received his bachelor's degree 1-7 from Baylor University in 1939, and two years later he married the 1-8 former Lillian Neale; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Dr. Miles was commissioned in the army from 1941 to 1-10 1946 and spent the last two years of his service in Washington, 1-11 D.C., where he began graduate work at George Washington University; 1-12 in 1947, he earned his master's degree from North Texas State 1-13 University, and in 1952 he was awarded his doctoral degree from The 1-14 University of Texas at Austin; and 1-15 WHEREAS, This passionate educator joined Sul Ross State 1-16 University in 1949 as professor of English and department chairman; 1-17 in addition to directing the Language Arts and Folklore Society, 1-18 Dr. Miles authored four books, Southwest Humorists, and the 1-19 companion pieces, Tales of the Big Bend, More Tales of the Big 1-20 Bend, and Stray Tales of the Big Bend; and 1-21 WHEREAS, A member of the Rotary Club and an elder in the 1-22 First Presbyterian Church of Alpine, this dedicated man was 1-23 respected for his sound judgment and commitment to his wife and 1-24 children; and 2-1 WHEREAS, Elton R. Miles was a man of rare compassion and 2-2 integrity, and though his guidance and devotion have been missed by 2-3 all who knew him, his spirit has continued to grow in the hearts of 2-4 those people whose lives he touched; now, therefore, be it 2-5 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas 2-6 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Elton R. Miles and 2-7 extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, 2-8 Lillian Miles; to his son, Harry McCauley Miles; to his daughter, 2-9 Adrienne Miles Bengtson; to his grandchildren, Forrest Elton Miles, 2-10 David Christopher Schwalbach, Theresa Diane Bengtson, and Maria 2-11 Claudia Bengtson; and to the many other relatives and friends of 2-12 this esteemed gentleman; and, be it further 2-13 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-14 prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas 2-15 House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of 2-16 Dr. Elton R.
