No. 331 75R8117 JTR-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, On August 31, 1996, Dr. Paul Robert Weyerts retired 1-2 from his position as director of the Range Animal Science Center at 1-3 Sul Ross State University, and his years of dedicated service are 1-4 indeed worthy of special praise and recognition; and 1-5 WHEREAS, An Alpine native, Dr. Weyerts earned his doctorate 1-6 in veterinary medicine from Texas A&M University in 1952 and later 1-7 received both a master's degree from Sul Ross State University and 1-8 a doctoral degree from the University of Wyoming; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Dr. Weyerts was already maintaining his own 1-10 veterinary practice in Alpine when he took on his first class, 1-11 teaching livestock management and diseases; though he received no 1-12 compensation for his initial foray into teaching, he was soon 1-13 assigned a number of classes, and in 1962 was hired as a full-time 1-14 instructor; and 1-15 WHEREAS, His command of the subject material and skill as an 1-16 educator ensured his continued success at the university, and he 1-17 was installed as a full professor in 1973 and as director of the 1-18 Range Animal Science Center in 1990; he further benefited the 1-19 school in his capacity as adviser to the Rodeo Club for 14 years, 1-20 and he is a past faculty president of the National Intercollegiate 1-21 Rodeo Association; and 1-22 WHEREAS, Dr. Weyerts' contributions to the community extend 1-23 far beyond his professional achievements, and he currently serves 1-24 as a board member and secretary to the Big Bend Civic Center 2-1 Foundation and as director of the Texas Production Credit 2-2 Association; a former city council member and mayor of Alpine, he 2-3 is also a director for life of the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers 2-4 Association; and 2-5 WHEREAS, Throughout his career, Dr. Weyerts has drawn on the 2-6 support and affection of his close-knit family, and he and his wife 2-7 Beverly derive great pride and satisfaction from their children, 2-8 Lucy Mae Schneider, Albert Appel Thorn, and Paul Robert Weyerts, 2-9 Jr.; more recently, they have welcomed son-in-law Frank Schneider, 2-10 daughter-in-law Amy Weyerts, and two beloved grandchildren into the 2-11 family; and 2-12 WHEREAS, Paul Weyerts' work as an educator, veterinarian, and 2-13 scientist have greatly benefited his fellow Texans, and it is 2-14 indeed fitting at this time to recognize him for his many 2-15 accomplishments; now, therefore, be it 2-16 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas 2-17 Legislature hereby honor Dr. Paul Robert Weyerts on the occasion of 2-18 his retirement and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued 2-19 success and happiness in the years to come; and, be it further 2-20 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-21 prepared for Dr. Weyerts as an expression of high regard by the 2-22 Texas House of Representatives.
