R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, On March 16, 1997, the members of Confederate Rose
1-2 Chapter 2548 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy will
1-3 dedicate a historical marker honoring Captain Edward T. Broughton
1-4 and the Johnson Guards, and this occasion is truly worthy of
1-5 special recognition; and
1-6 WHEREAS, In early 1861, supporters of the Confederate cause
1-7 in the Kaufman area banded together to form the Kaufman Light
1-8 Infantry, and they mustered in Prairieville in September of that
1-9 year under the command of Captain Edward T. Broughton, the area's
1-10 district attorney; and
1-11 WHEREAS, Renaming themselves the Johnson Guards after
1-12 prominent local merchants, the company joined Company C of Colonel
1-13 John Gregg's 7th Regiment of Texas Volunteers and went on to serve
1-14 with distinction; though twice taken prisoner by Union forces,
1-15 Captain Broughton returned to his unit, and he demonstrated his
1-16 bravery in no uncertain terms at the bloody battle of Franklin,
1-17 Tennessee, where, though wounded, he assumed command of his
1-18 regiment after his superior officers were killed; and
1-19 WHEREAS, Texans are known throughout the world for the fierce
1-20 pride we take in our colorful past, and in dedicating a historical
1-21 marker to the exploits of Captain Broughton and his men, the
1-22 members of Confederate Rose Chapter 2548 keep alive the memory of
1-23 this critical turning point in the history of our state and our
1-24 nation; now, therefore, be it
2-1 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas
2-2 Legislature hereby commemorate the dedication of a historical
2-3 marker honoring Captain Edward T. Broughton and the Johnson Guards
2-4 and extend to the members of Confederate Rose Chapter 2548 best
2-5 wishes for continued success in their historical preservation
2-6 efforts; and, be it further
2-7 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-8 prepared for the members of Confederate Rose Chapter 2548 as an
2-9 expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
