                                 R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, The family and many friends of J. P. Brantley were

 1-2     greatly saddened by his passing on August 20, 1995, in Lubbock, at

 1-3     the age of 80; and

 1-4           WHEREAS, Born August 15, 1915, in Dowdville, Mississippi,

 1-5     Mr. Brantley was the eighth of nine children; at the age of six he

 1-6     and his family moved to Wellington, and from this point on he

 1-7     remained a loyal Texan; and

 1-8           WHEREAS, After graduating from Littlefield High School,

 1-9     Mr. Brantley and his brothers ran a general store in Amherst, and

1-10     it was during that time that he was wed to the former Savannah

1-11     Bass; and

1-12           WHEREAS, In 1942, Mr. Brantley turned to cotton farming, a

1-13     vocation he would pursue throughout his life, and his agricultural

1-14     acumen ensured his success in this venture; in addition, he was

1-15     known far and wide for growing delicious peaches and what were said

1-16     to be the best tomatoes in West Texas; and

1-17           WHEREAS, Throughout his life, Mr. Brantley drew strength and

1-18     inspiration from his fellow worshipers at Amherst Baptist Church,

1-19     and his active participation in the life of the church extended to

1-20     both everyday chores and to his many years of service as a deacon;

1-21     and

1-22           WHEREAS, J. P. Brantley took particular pride and

1-23     satisfaction in his family, and he and Mrs. Brantley were blessed

1-24     with three children, Jerry Lynn, Cecilia Joan, and the late

 2-1     Patricia Jan; over the years, this close-knit and loving group has

 2-2     grown to include in-laws Carol Ann Brantley and Mike Stafford, as

 2-3     well as grandchildren Kent Stafford and Julie Stafford; and

 2-4           WHEREAS, Though he is missed, J. P. Brantley lives on in the

 2-5     hearts of all those whose lives he touched, and we join them in

 2-6     honoring his memory at this time; now, therefore, be it

 2-7           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

 2-8     Legislature hereby honor the memory of J. P. Brantley and extend

 2-9     sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife,

2-10     Savannah Brantley; to his son and daughter-in-law, Jerry Lynn and

2-11     Carol Ann Brantley; to his daughter and son-in-law Cecilia Joan and

2-12     Mike Stafford; and to his grandchildren, Kent Stafford and Julie

2-13     Stafford; and, be it further

2-14           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

2-15     prepared for the members of his family as an expression of high

2-16     regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
