                                 R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, The passing of Helen M. Wanamaker on September 29,

 1-2     1996, at the age of 72, has brought a great loss to the family and

 1-3     many friends of this esteemed Live Oak resident; and

 1-4           WHEREAS, A native of Cambridge, Massachusetts, she proudly

 1-5     served her country during World War II as a member of the United

 1-6     States Navy Intelligence Office; Mrs. Wanamaker wed her high school

 1-7     sweetheart, Lieutenant Colonel Howard S. "Sam" Wanamaker in 1944,

 1-8     and the couple enjoyed a happy and rewarding union that spanned 35

 1-9     years until his passing; and

1-10           WHEREAS, Because of Colonel Wanamaker's military career,

1-11     their family travelled extensively; Mrs. Wanamaker made their home

1-12     in such distant locales as Morocco and Japan, but she considered

1-13     the San Antonio area, where the couple resided for all but three

1-14     years from 1951 to 1962, as home; and

1-15           WHEREAS, After her husband retired in 1969, the couple moved

1-16     to Miami, where Mrs. Wanamaker embarked on a 20-year career in the

1-17     field of medical administration; and

1-18           WHEREAS, In 1990, Mrs. Wanamaker returned to the San Antonio

1-19     area, where she was well known in political circles for her active

1-20     involvement in the Republican Party as a precinct chair, a member

1-21     of state and local party organizations, and a delegate to both the

1-22     Texas Federation of Republican Women's Convention and the

1-23     Republican State Convention, which honored her with its Tribute of

1-24     Women Award in 1992; and

 2-1           WHEREAS, This remarkable lady also worked for the betterment

 2-2     of her community through her participation in numerous civic

 2-3     organizations, including the Universal City Kiwanis, the Universal

 2-4     City Library, the Universal City Animal Shelter, and the Officers'

 2-5     Wives Club; five years ago, she moved to Live Oak, where she

 2-6     remained active in politics, and she was named precinct chair in

 2-7     1995; and

 2-8           WHEREAS, A woman of immense commitment and energy, Helen

 2-9     Wanamaker contributed greatly to our state, and though she is gone

2-10     from us now, her memory will long endure in the hearts and minds of

2-11     all who came to know and love her; now, therefore, be it

2-12           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

2-13     Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Helen M. Wanamaker

2-14     and extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to her

2-15     son and daughter-in-law, Ken and Pat Wanamaker; to her sisters,

2-16     Barbara Gosselin and Rita Wanamaker; to her grandchildren, Jeremy

2-17     Wanamaker and Jennifer Keeler; to her three great-grandchildren;

2-18     and to the many other friends and relatives of this beloved lady;

2-19     and, be it further

2-20           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

2-21     prepared for the members of her family and that when the Texas

2-22     House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of

2-23     Helen M.  Wanamaker.
