R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, The passing of John Christian Mayfield, Jr., on

 1-2     March 4, 1997, at the age of 82, has brought a great loss to the

 1-3     many friends and relatives of this esteemed Texan; and

 1-4           WHEREAS, A veteran of the United States Air Force,

 1-5     Mr. Mayfield was graduated from Southwest Texas State University in

 1-6     1936; he wed the former Evelyn King the following year, and the

 1-7     couple went on to enjoy 60 happy and rewarding years of marriage;

 1-8     and

 1-9           WHEREAS, Mr. Mayfield began his career as a business

1-10     education teacher at Burnett High School and went on to serve as a

1-11     principal in Belfalls; during his years as an educator, he

1-12     encouraged his students to strive toward achieving their highest

1-13     potential and, in doing so, he earned a special place in the hearts

1-14     of many young Texans; and

1-15           WHEREAS, Mr. Mayfield was also highly regarded as a

1-16     successful businessman; he established the Mayfield Paper Company

1-17     in San Angelo and Abilene, and he positively affected a host of

1-18     issues vital to his profession as president of the Southwestern

1-19     Paper Merchants Association; and

1-20           WHEREAS, This dedicated civic leader served his community

1-21     through his involvement with such worthy organizations as the San

1-22     Angelo Chamber of Commerce and the boards of both the Hendrick

1-23     Medical Center and Abilene National Bank; he was active with the

1-24     Abilene Symphony Orchestra, the Abilene United Way, and the Rotary

 2-1     Club as well, and his stalwart service throughout the years earned

 2-2     him the admiration of his many friends and neighbors in the

 2-3     community; and

 2-4           WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Mayfield was sustained by

 2-5     his faith as a devout member of the First Baptist Church, where he

 2-6     was involved in the Silent Ministry and the Singles Department; and

 2-7           WHEREAS, A man of great energy and vision, John Christian

 2-8     Mayfield, Jr., left an indelible mark on the Abilene community

 2-9     during his years on this earth, and though his presence will be

2-10     deeply missed, his memory will long endure in the hearts and minds

2-11     of all who were privileged to know him; now, therefore, be it

2-12           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

2-13     Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of John Christian

2-14     Mayfield, Jr., and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his

2-15     family: to his beloved wife, Evelyn Mayfield; to his sons and

2-16     daughters-in-law, Stanley and Deanna Mayfield, Don and Cherie

2-17     Mayfield, and Bill and Sue Mayfield; to his sister, Ida Byrd Wood;

2-18     to his grandchildren and their spouses, Lisa and Freeman Pickett,

2-19     John and Debbie Mayfield, Julie and Brian Barker, Chris Mayfield,

2-20     Kelly Mayfield, and Jonathan Mayfield; to his great-grandchildren,

2-21     Bill Pickett and Ashley Barker; and to the many other friends and

2-22     relatives of this fine gentleman; and, be it further

2-23           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

2-24     prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas

2-25     House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of

2-26     John Christian Mayfield, Jr.
