R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives takes special
1-2 pleasure in honoring Dr. Charles C. Andrews, Sr., for his many
1-3 outstanding contributions to his profession, community, and state;
1-4 and
1-5 WHEREAS, This esteemed physician pursued his higher education
1-6 at Howard University, where he earned his undergraduate and medical
1-7 degrees; relocating to the Alamo City following his graduation, he
1-8 opened a medical practice on the west side of San Antonio in 1933;
1-9 and
1-10 WHEREAS, In addition to maintaining his general family
1-11 practice, Dr. Andrews ran a free children's clinic at the YWCA on
1-12 San Antonio's east side, and his gentle and knowledgeable approach
1-13 to patient care was a comfort and blessing to those children who
1-14 might otherwise have been denied medical treatment; and
1-15 WHEREAS, Dr. Andrews also served the needs of his community
1-16 by authoring a weekly column for the San Antonio Register titled
1-17 "Your Child and Mine" during the late 1930s and early 1940s; and
1-18 WHEREAS, At 93 years of age, he is the oldest
1-19 African-American physician in the city of San Antonio, but still
1-20 maintains active affiliations with such notable organizations as
1-21 the N.A.A.C.P., C. A. Whittier Medical Society, the National
1-22 Medical Association, West End Baptist Church, and many others; and
1-23 WHEREAS, Having retired from active practice in 1987, he now
1-24 spends much of his time fishing, gardening, reading medical
2-1 journals, and spending time with his wife, Darlene, and his
2-2 children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; and
2-3 WHEREAS, Throughout his career, Dr. Andrews dedicated his
2-4 efforts to providing a brighter and healthier future for the
2-5 members of his community, and his remarkable achievements in this
2-6 regard are indeed worthy of special legislative recognition; now,
2-7 therefore, be it
2-8 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas
2-9 Legislature hereby commend Dr. Charles C. Andrews, Sr., on the many
2-10 significant contributions he has made to his fellow citizens; and,
2-11 be it further
2-12 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-13 prepared for Dr. Andrews as an expression of high regard by the
2-14 Texas House of Representatives.
