                                 R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, The Westlake High School Chaparrals football team

 1-2     has reached the pinnacle of success by winning the 1996 University

 1-3     Interscholastic League (UIL) Class 5-A, Division II state

 1-4     championship; and

 1-5           WHEREAS, After completing the regular season undefeated,

 1-6     Westlake High School began its quest for the state title against

 1-7     San Antonio MacArthur High School, earning a hard-fought 20-10

 1-8     victory; and

 1-9           WHEREAS, Their next opponent was also a team from the Alamo

1-10     City, but San Antonio Clark High School fared no better against

1-11     this talented Westlake club, as the Chaparrals won 33-19; and

1-12           WHEREAS, Facing Victoria High School in the regional

1-13     semifinal round, the Chaparrals put on a textbook demonstration of

1-14     gridiron excellence, completely dominating their foe en route to a

1-15     41-0 shutout; and

1-16           WHEREAS, Westlake next met San Antonio Churchill in the state

1-17     quarterfinals and the Chaparrals offense carried the day as the

1-18     team cruised to a 49-23 triumph; and

1-19           WHEREAS, Aldine High School was the final obstacle separating

1-20     Westlake from a berth in the state title game, but the Chaparrals

1-21     refused to be denied and won handily by a score of 42-21; and

1-22           WHEREAS, With the state championship on the line, the

1-23     Chaparrals broke open a close game with Abilene Cooper High School

1-24     by scoring 48 second half points, winning by a final score of 55-15

 2-1     to claim the coveted title and complete their storybook season with

 2-2     a perfect record of 16 wins and no defeats; and

 2-3           WHEREAS, The season's outstanding accomplishments were a

 2-4     result of total dedication to the team concept by players Jeremy

 2-5     Amos, Ryan Read, Jonny Rodgers, Nathan Cain, David White, Drew

 2-6     Brees, Jamie Tyler, Tomi Keah, Cooper Waddill, Aaron Santiso, Zac

 2-7     Bryant, Bub Downing, Ben DeLeon, Jason Piefer, Robert Crawford,

 2-8     Matt Lathrop, Seth McKinney, Matt Matza, Scott Killen, Derek Hyzak,

 2-9     Brad Kline, Justin Hartley, Mark Fitzgibbons, Justin Binford, Matt

2-10     Murphy, Hayden Briggle, Bradfield Heiser, Spike Sauls, Kurt

2-11     Thormahlen, Devin Schade, Travis Thompson, Jeff White, Jonathan

2-12     Piefer, John Allen, Ryan Nixon, Shane Imbert, Robby Nethercut, Tom

2-13     Martindale, Sam Thompson, Travis Eickenhorst, Brett Buller, Alex

2-14     Dunlap, Hunter Stewart, Dylan Becker, Adam Hall, Brett Robin, Brent

2-15     Chalmers, Clint Jeane, Dan Zoch, and Pat Malone; and

2-16           WHEREAS, Head coach Ron Schroeder provided his young charges

2-17     with the inspiration and guidance necessary to fulfill their

2-18     championship dream, and he was ably supported in his efforts by

2-19     assistant coaches Derek Long, Mark Hurst, Lefty Fisher, Jim

2-20     Darilek, Neal LaHue, David Smart, and Steve Davis; athletic

2-21     director Ebbie Neptune; trainers Brad Hawkins and Vicki Stafko;

2-22     team doctor Dr. Newt Hasson; and student trainers and managers

2-23     Christina Baker, Aaron Wilson, Ryan Nutt, Bradley Woolwine, Emily

2-24     Veneski, and Zach Woosley; and

2-25           WHEREAS, This exceptional group of young men, along with

2-26     their coaches and staff, are a tremendous source of pride to the

2-27     students and faculty at Westlake High School and their many

 3-1     supporters in the community, and their remarkable achievement is

 3-2     indeed worthy of special legislative recognition; now, therefore,

 3-3     be it

 3-4           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

 3-5     Legislature hereby congratulate the Westlake High School Chaparrals

 3-6     on winning the 1996 UIL Class 5-A, Division II state championship

 3-7     and extend best wishes for continued success in the future; and, be

 3-8     it further

 3-9           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

3-10     prepared for the team members and coaching staff as an expression

3-11     of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
