R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, John E. Matysek, principal of Westlake High School,
1-2 has served Austin area students, staff, and residents as an
1-3 outstanding educator, administrator, and role model for nearly
1-4 three decades; and
1-5 WHEREAS, A native of Taylor, Texas, he began his higher
1-6 education at Del Mar Junior College on a football scholarship and
1-7 also attended Baylor University on a scholarship before completing
1-8 his bachelor of science degree from that fine institution; he
1-9 continued his pursuit of academic excellence at Southwest Texas
1-10 State University, where he attained his master's degree in
1-11 education; and
1-12 WHEREAS, Mr. Matysek started his distinguished career as a
1-13 world history teacher and assistant football coach with the
1-14 Yorktown Independent School District (ISD) in 1963, and after
1-15 leaving Yorktown for a three year stint with the Dickinson ISD, he
1-16 joined the staff of the Austin ISD in 1968; and
1-17 WHEREAS, Moving from athletics to administration in 1979,
1-18 Mr. Matysek began his exemplary tenure with the Eanes ISD as
1-19 assistant principal at Hill Country Middle School and was promoted
1-20 to the post of principal the following year; he was named principal
1-21 of Westlake High School in 1984 and over the course of the past 13
1-22 years has been instrumental in establishing the high standards of
1-23 academic excellence for which the school has become known; and
1-24 WHEREAS, He is an active and respected voice in his field,
2-1 and maintains memberships in such respected organizations as the
2-2 Texas State Teachers Association, National Education Association,
2-3 Austin Association of Teachers, Texas High School Coaches
2-4 Association, Texas Middle School Association, and Texas Association
2-5 of Secondary School Principals; and
2-6 WHEREAS, In recognition of his accomplishments Mr. Matysek
2-7 has received a number of well-deserved accolades, including the
2-8 Spirit of Education award from the Eanes Educators Association in
2-9 1984 and 1990, and the Administrator of the Year award from the
2-10 Texas Association of Journalism Educators in 1990; and
2-11 WHEREAS, He has been supported in all his endeavors by his
2-12 devoted wife, Linda, and their daughter, Dayna, who is herself a
2-13 graduate of Westlake High School; and
2-14 WHEREAS, This fine educator is an inspiration to Texans
2-15 everywhere who are committed to improving the quality of public
2-16 education in this state, and his many remarkable achievements in
2-17 this regard are indeed worthy of special legislative recognition;
2-18 now, therefore, be it
2-19 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas
2-20 Legislature hereby honor John E. Matysek for his significant
2-21 contributions to the vital cause of education in the State of Texas
2-22 and extend to him warmest best wishes for continued success and
2-23 happiness in the future; and, be it further
2-24 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-25 prepared for Mr. Matysek as an expression of high regard by the
2-26 Texas House of Representatives.
