R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, March 25, 1997, is Hunt County Day at the State
1-2 Capitol, and the Texas House of Representatives is proud to welcome
1-3 those citizens who have traveled to the Capitol City from this
1-4 historic region; and
1-5 WHEREAS, Established in 1846 from Fannin and Nacogdoches
1-6 counties, Hunt County was originally inhabited by a few small bands
1-7 of Kiowa Indians before the first Anglo-American settlers arrived
1-8 in 1839; the county is well known for its abundant cotton
1-9 production and for the many famous Texans who have called this area
1-10 home; and
1-11 WHEREAS, Greenville, the county seat, is also the county's
1-12 largest city and features diverse manufacturing, including space
1-13 electronics, oil field machinery, and agricultural chemicals;
1-14 Commerce, the county's second-largest town, is home to East Texas
1-15 State University, a major university that offers more than 77
1-16 fields of study, including 15 doctoral programs; and
1-17 WHEREAS, Among the attractions offered by Hunt County are the
1-18 American Cotton Museum, which is devoted to preserving the rich
1-19 history of the county's cotton industry, and the Audie Murphy Room,
1-20 which houses mementos of America's most decorated World War II
1-21 soldier and a Hunt County native; and
1-22 WHEREAS, Both Greenville and Commerce boast antique and
1-23 specialty shops that draw tourists from miles around, and the area
1-24 is dotted with several beautiful lakes that are perfect for
2-1 fishing, boating, and other water sports; and
2-2 WHEREAS, Rich in both history and tradition, Hunt County is a
2-3 prosperous, forward-looking community that plays a vital role in
2-4 the Lone Star State's dynamic growth, and the members of this
2-5 chamber are pleased to join in paying tribute to this outstanding
2-6 region; now, therefore, be it
2-7 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas
2-8 Legislature hereby recognize March 25, 1997, as Hunt County Day at
2-9 the State Capitol and extend best wishes to the citizens of Hunt
2-10 County for continued success and happiness in the years to come;
2-11 and, be it further
2-12 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-13 prepared for the citizens of Hunt County as an expression of high
2-14 regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
