R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, During his 25 years in the Christian ministry, the

 1-2     Reverend Robert E. "Bob" Hayes, Jr., has faithfully served the

 1-3     spiritual needs of his community, and his genuine regard for the

 1-4     welfare of others has enriched the lives of many people; and

 1-5           WHEREAS, The son and grandson of Methodist ministers,

 1-6     Reverend Hayes was born and reared in a parsonage; he was graduated

 1-7     from Huston-Tillotson College before earning a degree from Perkins

 1-8     School of Theology, and he has furthered his education by working

 1-9     towards a doctorate at Drew University in New Jersey; and

1-10           WHEREAS, His remarkable efforts in behalf of others have

1-11     earned him great renown, for he was selected by the United

1-12     Methodist Church to tour Europe and  Asia in 1967 and became one of

1-13     the first black men in the world to visit Siberia; Reverend Hayes

1-14     was also selected to Who's Who in American Colleges and

1-15     Universities and was voted an Outstanding Young Man in America in

1-16     1969; and

1-17           WHEREAS, He began his pastorate at McCabe United Methodist

1-18     Church in Longview in 1972 and went on to offer comfort and

1-19     spiritual support to the congregations at Blueridge United

1-20     Methodist Church and Riverside United Methodist Church; and

1-21           WHEREAS, This respected clergyman currently serves both the

1-22     Lord and his faith as superintendent to the Houston Southwest

1-23     District, in which capacity he handles a host of important

1-24     responsibilities as supervisor of 47 churches, and he has also been

 2-1     involved with several boards and agencies of the Texas Annual

 2-2     Conference; and

 2-3           WHEREAS, Throughout the years, Reverend Hayes has remained

 2-4     committed to his community and has further worked for the

 2-5     betterment of his fellow Houstonians as a board member of both the

 2-6     Wesley Community Center and the Houston Ebony Opera Guild; and

 2-7           WHEREAS, The proud father of three children, Joya, who will

 2-8     be entering law school in the fall of 1997; Robert III, who is a

 2-9     senior at Southern University in Louisiana; and Ryan, who attends

2-10     Bellaire High School, he takes great pleasure and satisfaction in

2-11     their many accomplishments; and

2-12           WHEREAS, Reverend Hayes is serving as Pastor of the Day for

2-13     the Texas House on April 15, 1997, and it is indeed fitting that

2-14     the members take this opportunity to honor him for his notable

2-15     career; now, therefore, be it

2-16           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

2-17     Legislature hereby commend the Reverend Robert E. "Bob" Hayes, Jr.,

2-18     for his outstanding service to the church and to the people of

2-19     Texas and extend to him warmest best wishes for continued

2-20     fulfillment in the future; and, be it further

2-21           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

2-22     prepared for Reverend Hayes as an expression of high regard by the

2-23     Texas House of Representatives.
