R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, St. Gregory's Elementary School in Tyler, Texas,

 1-2     celebrated the 50th anniversary of its opening on January 21, 1996,

 1-3     and that event was indeed a significant occasion for the local

 1-4     community; and

 1-5           WHEREAS, In 1940, Bishop Joseph P. Lynch of Dallas sanctioned

 1-6     the construction of a Catholic school in Tyler and Father Vincent

 1-7     J. Wolf, who was a pastor in the city at that time, began his plans

 1-8     for the creation of a parochial school; and

 1-9           WHEREAS, The project was blessed by the generosity of Mr. and

1-10     Mrs. L. M. Glasco, who donated property on South College Avenue as

1-11     a site for the school; the land was given in memory of the Glasco's

1-12     sixth son, Gregory, who had lost his life to polio, and St.

1-13     Gregory's was fittingly named after his patron saint; and

1-14           WHEREAS, When it first opened its doors, this fine

1-15     institution was home to 102 students enrolled in kindergarten

1-16     through the eighth grade, but demand for quality education has

1-17     risen during the intervening years, and the student population now

1-18     numbers more than 300 young Texans; and

1-19           WHEREAS, Coinciding with the commemoration of St. Gregory's

1-20     50th anniversary was the dedication of a new gymnasium at the

1-21     school, the burial of a time capsule, and a mass of celebration;

1-22     and

1-23           WHEREAS, The men and women who have worked at St. Gregory's

1-24     Elementary School during its half-century of existence have

 2-1     consistently sought to fully develop their students intellectually,

 2-2     culturally, and spiritually, and their exceptional accomplishments

 2-3     in this regard indeed merit special legislative recognition at this

 2-4     time; now, therefore, be it

 2-5           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

 2-6     Legislature hereby honor St. Gregory's Elementary School in Tyler

 2-7     on the 50th anniversary of its founding; and, be it further

 2-8           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

 2-9     prepared for prominent display at St. Gregory's Elementary School

2-10     as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of

2-11     Representatives.
