R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, The third week in October is traditionally devoted

 1-2     to the Texas Rose Festival in Tyler, and this year's event will

 1-3     take place on October 16-19, 1997; and

 1-4           WHEREAS, First celebrated in 1933 as a means of promoting the

 1-5     area's naturally occurring roses while boosting the image of the

 1-6     Tyler community, the Texas Rose Festival has blossomed into the

 1-7     premier event of its kind; enthusiasts travel from all corners of

 1-8     the world to revel in the magnificence and splendor of this

 1-9     four-day celebration and to partake in the abundance of activities

1-10     associated with the event; and

1-11           WHEREAS, The theme for this year's festival is "The Spirit of

1-12     America," and participants and visitors will display their

1-13     patriotism amid the distinctive backdrop of this charming Texas

1-14     city; the star-spangled gala will feature a host of talented

1-15     performers, locally produced arts and crafts, and, of course, the

1-16     roses that have earned Tyler international renown; and

1-17           WHEREAS, Hundreds of thousands of these botanical beauties

1-18     will be on display at the Rose Show and in the Tyler Municipal Rose

1-19     Garden, one of the largest municipal rose gardens in the country;

1-20     for those interested in the history of this great event, the Texas

1-21     Rose Museum provides a detailed chronicle of the festival and is

1-22     also home to one of the world's most extensive archives of roses;

1-23     and

1-24           WHEREAS, Other activities include the Palette of Roses art

 2-1     show, the Rambling Roses Square and Round Dance, and the Rose

 2-2     Festival Parade; visitors will also be treated to the East Texas

 2-3     Symphony Orchestra's "Concert in the Park" and can witness the pomp

 2-4     and circumstance that surround the annual coronation of the Rose

 2-5     Queen; and

 2-6           WHEREAS, The long and impressive history of the Texas Rose

 2-7     Festival has made it a favorite among Texans and visitors from

 2-8     around the world, and the pride that this event has instilled in so

 2-9     many Texans makes it truly deserving of special legislative

2-10     recognition; now, therefore, be it

2-11           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

2-12     Legislature hereby commemorate the Texas Rose Festival and extend

2-13     best wishes to the citizens of Tyler and to all the participants in

2-14     this grand event.
