                                 R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, The 10th Annual Cattle Barons' Gala will be held on

 1-2     June 7, 1997, at the Cavender Ranch in Griffin, and this event is

 1-3     indeed deserving of special legislative recognition; and

 1-4           WHEREAS, The theme for this year's gala is "A Tin Star Salute

 1-5     to a Decade of Tradition," and in a continuance of the commitment

 1-6     to excellence that has become associated with this annual benefit,

 1-7     this year's featured entertainer is country music recording star

 1-8     Mark Chestnut; and

 1-9           WHEREAS, Proceeds from the evening-long event will, as

1-10     always, go to the American Cancer Society to help promote cancer

1-11     awareness and prevention and provide treatment for those suffering

1-12     from this devastating affliction; and

1-13           WHEREAS, The latest estimates predict that approximately one

1-14     out of three Americans will develop cancer in some form during his

1-15     or her lifetime, and the American Cancer Society is committed to

1-16     stamping out this dreaded disease while advancing coping skills and

1-17     recovery suggestions for individuals who develop cancer; and

1-18           WHEREAS, During this "Decade of Tradition," the Cattle

1-19     Barons' Gala has contributed more than $1.5 million to this

1-20     outstanding organization, and many Smith County residents have

1-21     benefited from these generous annual donations; in 1995-1996, 382

1-22     cancer patients received free services in Smith County as part of a

1-23     program sponsored by the American Cancer Society; and

1-24           WHEREAS, Events such as the Annual Cattle Barons' Gala

 2-1     demonstrate the power of unity in the face of adversity and set a

 2-2     shining example for Texans and Americans everywhere, and the

 2-3     members of this chamber are pleased to recognize this noteworthy

 2-4     affair; now, therefore, be it

 2-5           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

 2-6     Legislature hereby commemorate the 10th Annual Cattle Barons' Gala

 2-7     and offer best wishes for another successful year of fund-raising;

 2-8     and, be it further

 2-9           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

2-10     prepared for 1997 cochairs Janet Hills and Carol Langston as an

2-11     expression of highest regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
