No. 531 75R10225 JHS-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The recent passing of Moses "Moe" Marin Sanchez on 1-2 March 23, 1997, at the age of 67, has brought a great loss to the 1-3 family and many friends of this beloved gentleman; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Born in San Antonio on July 27, 1929, Mr. Sanchez 1-5 was a dedicated patriot who, after graduating from Milby High 1-6 School in 1948, served his country during the Korean War as a 1-7 member of the United States Marine Corps; he received two Purple 1-8 Hearts and was honorably discharged with the rank of staff sergeant 1-9 in 1952; and 1-10 WHEREAS, In 1956, this exceptional individual was graduated 1-11 from the University of Houston with a degree in marketing; in 1971 1-12 he earned his juris doctorate degree from South Texas College of 1-13 Law and soon established a thriving private practice with an 1-14 emphasis in criminal law; and 1-15 WHEREAS, Appointed the youngest district manager for 1-16 Travelers Express, he went on to serve as an assistant to the 1-17 executive director of the Houston International Trade and Travel 1-18 Fair, in which capacity he promoted Houston as an international 1-19 trade and travel center; and 1-20 WHEREAS, In 1965, Mr. Sanchez established the first 1-21 Spanish-English weekly newspaper, El Sol, which he both published 1-22 and edited; he later undertook the plight of disadvantaged 1-23 Americans when he served as executive director from 1967 to 1974 of 1-24 SER-CEP Jobs for Progress of Houston, a manpower training 2-1 organization; and 2-2 WHEREAS, An active member of the First Presbyterian Church of 2-3 Houston, Mr. Sanchez was recently honored for his many years of 2-4 service to the city of Houston when Mayor Bob Lanier proclaimed 2-5 January 28, 1997, as Moses "Moe" Sanchez Day; and 2-6 WHEREAS, Moses "Moe" Marin Sanchez was a man of rare 2-7 compassion and integrity, and although his guidance and devotion 2-8 will be missed by all who knew him, his spirit will surely live on 2-9 in the hearts of the many people whose lives he touched; now, 2-10 therefore, be it 2-11 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas 2-12 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Moses "Moe" Marin 2-13 Sanchez and extend deepest sympathy to the members of his family: 2-14 to his wife, Lola Alston Slater Sanchez; to his sons and 2-15 daughters-in-law, David Sanchez, Tommy and Kimberly Sanchez, Willis 2-16 Robert Sanchez, and Michael and Melissa Sanchez; to his daughters 2-17 and son-in-law, Sandra and Scott Jensen, Vicki Slater, Tamara 2-18 Slater McKay, and Cheryl Slater Summers; to his grandchildren, 2-19 Christopher Hughes, Joseph and Katherine Nell Sanchez, Stephanie 2-20 and Sean Jensen, Zachary and Jordan Sanchez, Colin Chance McKay, 2-21 and Kimberly, Kory, and Robert Summers; and to the many other 2-22 relatives and friends of this esteemed gentleman; and, be it 2-23 further 2-24 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-25 prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas 2-26 House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of 2-27 Moses "Moe" Marin Sanchez.
