                                 R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, Houston police officer Alvin Gills has been named an

 1-2     outstanding Texan by the Texas Legislative Black Caucus, and this

 1-3     notable honor is truly worthy of special praise and recognition;

 1-4     and

 1-5           WHEREAS, A Houston police officer for more than 12 years,

 1-6     Officer Gills has served the city with distinction, bringing his

 1-7     skills and professionalism to a number of divisions within the

 1-8     department; currently coordinating the Parents and Neighbors

 1-9     Defense Alliance as part of his work in the department's Community

1-10     Outreach Division, he has also served in the Accident, Narcotics,

1-11     Vice, Auto Theft, U.S. Customs, and Secret Service details and has

1-12     received letters of commendation from Mayor Bob Lanier, Chief Sam

1-13     Nuchia, and numerous supervisors; and

1-14           WHEREAS, Trained at Houston Community College and the Houston

1-15     Police Academy, Officer Gills continues to pursue new horizons in

1-16     his education and is currently attending Union Theological

1-17     Seminary, majoring in psychology with concentrations in sociology

1-18     and theology; and

1-19           WHEREAS, Officer Gills's contributions to the community

1-20     extend far beyond his professional life, and he and his wife Alma,

1-21     also a police officer, are the founders of A Child is Born Outreach

1-22     Family, Inc., a nonprofit organization that serves neglected and

1-23     abused young women and girls between the ages of 3 and 18; and

1-24           WHEREAS, Throughout his career, Officer Gills has drawn

 2-1     strength and sustenance from his loving family; he and his wife

 2-2     take great pride and pleasure in their two daughters and enjoy a

 2-3     close relationship with his mother, Ann Gills, and his sister

 2-4     Cheryl; and

 2-5           WHEREAS, Alvin Gills has established himself as a dedicated

 2-6     peace officer, a caring friend and neighbor, and a devoted family

 2-7     man, and it is indeed appropriate to recognize his many

 2-8     accomplishments at this time; now, therefore, be it

 2-9           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

2-10     Legislature hereby congratulate Officer Alvin Gills on being named

2-11     an outstanding Texan by the Texas Legislative Black Caucus and

2-12     extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success and

2-13     happiness in the future; and, be it further

2-14           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

2-15     prepared for Officer Gills as an expression of high regard by the

2-16     Texas House of Representatives.
