R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, The Santa Maria High School boys' basketball team

 1-2     achieved outstanding success during the 1996-1997 season by earning

 1-3     runner-up status in District 32-2A as well as a coveted berth in

 1-4     the state playoffs; and

 1-5           WHEREAS, Although Santa Maria High School has competed in

 1-6     varsity basketball for only the past five years, the program has

 1-7     shown a steady climb to success, culminating in this year's team

 1-8     record of 19 wins and 13 losses; and

 1-9           WHEREAS, The season's notable accomplishments were a result

1-10     of total dedication to the team concept by players Willie Espinoza,

1-11     Frank Velez, David Medrano, Juan Rico, Jaime Cosme, Onofre

1-12     Gonzalez, Robbie Velasquez, Albert Cantu, Alvaro Gomez, Noe Aleman,

1-13     Omar Lopez, and Sergio Munoz; and

1-14           WHEREAS, Although each team member performed admirably,

1-15     several players also attained individual honors, including Omar

1-16     Lopez, who was a unanimous choice for first team all-district and

1-17     was also named third team All-Rio Grande Valley; Noe Aleman,

1-18     unanimous first team all-district; Robbie Velasquez, second team

1-19     all-district; David Medrano, honorable mention all-district; and

1-20     Albert Cantu, honorable mention all-district; and

1-21           WHEREAS, Head Coach Chris Kromer schooled his young charges

1-22     in basketball fundamentals, and he was ably supported in his

1-23     efforts by junior varsity coach Raul Rivera and freshman/sophomore

1-24     coach Chuck Willeford; other invaluable assistance was provided to

 2-1     the team by statisticians Maria Montalvo and Nuria Cantu, manager

 2-2     Jorge Torres, and video technician Juan Morales; and

 2-3           WHEREAS, This dedicated group of young men is a source of

 2-4     tremendous pride to the students and faculty at Santa Maria High

 2-5     School, as well as their many supporters in the community, and

 2-6     their exceptional athletic achievements are indeed worthy of

 2-7     special legislative recognition at this time; now, therefore, be it

 2-8           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

 2-9     Legislature hereby congratulate the members of the Santa Maria High

2-10     School boys' basketball team on their superb accomplishments during

2-11     the course of the 1996-1997 season, including their first

2-12     appearance in the state playoffs, and extend to them sincere best

2-13     wishes for continued success in the future; and, be it further

2-14           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

2-15     prepared for the team members and coaching staff as an expression

2-16     of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
