R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, Dr. Clyde Austin has distinguished himself as a

 1-2     psychologist of worldwide repute as well as a gifted instructor,

 1-3     and his many notable achievements are indeed worthy of special

 1-4     praise and recognition; and

 1-5           WHEREAS, A native Texan, Dr. Austin received a bachelor's

 1-6     degree in psychology from Abilene Christian University (ACU) before

 1-7     earning his master's degree in personnel service from the

 1-8     University of Colorado-Boulder, and he went on to complete his

 1-9     doctoral work at the University of Houston; and

1-10           WHEREAS, This respected educator embarked on his long and

1-11     fruitful career on the faculty on ACU in 1956; since that time he

1-12     has gained a well-deserved reputation as a talented teacher, and in

1-13     1984 he was selected by his colleagues as one of two outstanding

1-14     professors in the school's College of Natural and Applied Sciences;

1-15     and

1-16           WHEREAS, An internationally known authority on culture shock

1-17     and related topics, Dr. Austin holds the Robert and Mary Ann Hall

1-18     Endowed Chair of Psychology and Intercultural Studies at ACU, the

1-19     first position of its kind in American higher education, and his

1-20     preeminence in this specialized and demanding field ensures the

1-21     continued excellence of the university's program in this area; and

1-22           WHEREAS, Dr. Austin's contributions to the discipline of

1-23     psychology extend far beyond his career in academia, and his own

1-24     experience as a vocational missionary well complements his

 2-1     professional expertise; a valued participant in projects around the

 2-2     world, he served as chairman of the Research Implementation

 2-3     Workshop at the Third International Conference on Missionary Kids

 2-4     in Nairobi, Kenya, which comprised 821 participants from 61

 2-5     different countries, as but one example of his global work; and

 2-6           WHEREAS, Committed as deeply to his faith as he is to his

 2-7     vocation, Dr. Austin is a valued member of the University Church of

 2-8     Christ in Abilene, to which he has given freely of his time and

 2-9     energy over the years, serving as elder and deacon; and

2-10           WHEREAS, Throughout his remarkable career, Dr. Austin has

2-11     drawn strength and sustenance from his loving and close-knit family

2-12     including his parents, C.D. Austin and Jessie Lee Neal Austin, his

2-13     sister Amy Jane and her husband Preston Parsons, and he and his

2-14     wife, Sheila Ann Hunter Austin take great pride in their four

2-15     children Jan, Marcia, Jo Anna and Stephen, as well as their spouses

2-16     Mr. Todd Scott, Captain Marlin Moore, Mr. Allen Rose and

2-17     Mrs. Lynette Blackburn Austin and three grandchildren; and

2-18           WHEREAS, Clyde Austin has distinguished himself as an

2-19     accomplished scholar, researcher, a skilled educator, and a devoted

2-20     family man, and it is indeed fitting at this time that we recognize

2-21     his remarkable achievements; now, therefore, be it

2-22           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

2-23     Legislature hereby honor Dr. Clyde Neal Austin for his many

2-24     accomplishments and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued

2-25     success and happiness in the years to come; and, be it further

2-26           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

2-27     prepared for Dr. Austin as an expression of high regard by the

 3-1     Texas House of Representatives.
