                                 R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, The passing of Lieutenant Colonel James A. Howden on

 1-2     March 22, 1997, at the age of 71, has brought a great loss to the

 1-3     family and many friends of this distinguished gentleman; and

 1-4           WHEREAS, A native of Brooklyn, New York, Colonel Howden grew

 1-5     up in Manhattan and Los Angeles; as a young man, he wed Anita

 1-6     Morgan Greeley, and the couple nurtured a happy and fulfilling

 1-7     union that spanned 42 years and was blessed with four sons; and

 1-8           WHEREAS, After his graduation from the University of

 1-9     Illinois, Colonel Howden was commissioned as a second lieutenant in

1-10     the 3rd Armored Cavalry; he had enlisted in the United States Army

1-11     during World War II and proudly served his country for 34 years

1-12     before retiring from the military in 1978; and

1-13           WHEREAS, He fought in five Korean campaigns as an infantry

1-14     and tank platoon leader, and he was fluent in Turkish, having

1-15     served for more than two years in Ankara, Turkey; Colonel Howden's

1-16     other assignments included duty with the United States Navy

1-17     Amphibious Group II, where he participated in the Gemini 10

1-18     recovery project, and tenure as staff officer with the military

1-19     command in Vietnam during the Tet Offensive; and

1-20           WHEREAS, This respected officer was also a commander at Fort

1-21     Leonard Wood, Missouri, where he served as regimental executive

1-22     officer of his 3rd Armored Cavalry regiment; through the years, he

1-23     was honored with many badges and medals for his brave and

1-24     meritorious conduct; and

 2-1           WHEREAS, After completing his military service, he embarked

 2-2     on a fulfilling career with McDonnell Douglas Corporation in Saudi

 2-3     Arabia, and most recently, he was a valued employee of the Kings X

 2-4     toy soldier shop  in the Menger Hotel; and

 2-5           WHEREAS, Colonel Howden's commitment to the Army was

 2-6     surpassed only by his love of family, and his devotion to his wife,

 2-7     children, and grandchildren was a source of inspiration to

 2-8     countless individuals; and

 2-9           WHEREAS, During his lifetime, James Howden touched the lives

2-10     of many people, and though his presence will be deeply missed, his

2-11     memory will long endure in the hearts and minds of all who knew and

2-12     loved him; now, therefore, be it

2-13           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

2-14     Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Lieutenant Colonel

2-15     James A. Howden and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his

2-16     family: to his beloved wife, Anita Morgan Greeley Howden; to his

2-17     four sons, James Howden, John Howden, Robert Howden, and Jeffrey

2-18     Howden; to his grandchildren, Taylor, Ian, Bruce, Spence, and

2-19     Connor; and to the many other friends and relatives of this fine

2-20     man; and, be it further

2-21           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

2-22     prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas

2-23     House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of

2-24     Lieutenant Colonel James A. Howden.
