                                 R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, J. D. Hurd has been named a recipient of Dallas

 1-2     Baptist University's 1997 Oak Cliff Good Samaritan Award for

 1-3     outstanding Christian service, and this noteworthy distinction is

 1-4     truly deserving of special praise and recognition; and

 1-5           WHEREAS, A native Texan, Mr. Hurd earned his bachelor's and

 1-6     master's degrees from Bishop College and also pursued his studies

 1-7     at a number of institutions, including the University of California

 1-8     at Los Angeles, The University of Texas at Austin, Texas Christian

 1-9     University, Texas A&M University, and North Texas State University;

1-10     and

1-11           WHEREAS, While still a student at Bishop, Mr. Hurd was

1-12     employed in the school registrar's office, and in 1996 he

1-13     celebrated his 50th year of continuous service to his alma mater;

1-14     the college's registrar from 1949 to 1988, he also served the

1-15     institution as a social studies and education instructor and

1-16     director of admissions, financial aid, recruitment, testing, and

1-17     veterans affairs; since 1990, he has served as registrar of Paul

1-18     Quinn College; and

1-19           WHEREAS, In addition to his work in the field of higher

1-20     education, Mr. Hurd has for 18 years been employed by the Dallas

1-21     Morning News as a customer service representative; a vital and

1-22     valued member of the community, he is an active member of New Hope

1-23     Baptist Church in Oak Cliff and has lent his time and energy to a

1-24     number of worthy organizations, including the Young Men's Christian

 2-1     Association and the National Association of College Deans and

 2-2     Registrars; and

 2-3           WHEREAS, J. D. Hurd has dedicated a lifetime of service to

 2-4     the ideals of higher education, and it is indeed fitting to honor

 2-5     his many accomplishments at this time; now, therefore, be it

 2-6           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

 2-7     Legislature hereby congratulate J. D. Hurd on receiving Dallas

 2-8     Baptist University's 1997 Oak Cliff Good Samaritan Award and extend

 2-9     to him sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness in

2-10     the future; and, be it further

2-11           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

2-12     prepared for Mr. Hurd as an expression of high regard by the Texas

2-13     House of Representatives.
