No. 618 75R11666 JHS-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Former U.S. Congressman John Bryant has served the 1-2 people of Texas in the political arena for nearly a 1-3 quarter-century, and his commitment to excellence throughout his 1-4 fine tenure in office is indeed deserving of special legislative 1-5 recognition; and 1-6 WHEREAS, After receiving his law degree from Southern 1-7 Methodist University's School of Law in 1972, Congressman Bryant 1-8 joined the Texas Senate and was named chief counsel of the Texas 1-9 Senate Subcommittee on Consumer Affairs in 1973; in a special 1-10 election in January of the following year he was elected to his 1-11 first term in the Texas House of Representatives; and 1-12 WHEREAS, His distinguished service in this lawmaking body was 1-13 recognized by his two-time selection as one of Texas Monthly's "Ten 1-14 Best Legislators in Texas" in 1977 and 1979 and his selection as 1-15 the "Hardest Working Member of the Texas Legislature" by the Texas 1-16 Capitol Press Corps in 1977; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Following his election to the U.S. House of 1-18 Representatives in 1983, Congressman Bryant enacted several major 1-19 pieces of legislation, authoring the Lobbying Disclosure Act, the 1-20 Texas Wilderness Act, and the repeal of the Fuel Use Act; during 1-21 his seven-term tenure, this native Texan served as Majority Whip 1-22 for Texas and was a member of the committees on energy and 1-23 commerce, the judiciary, and the budget, as well as many prominent 1-24 subcommittees and task forces; and 2-1 WHEREAS, This notable gentleman was the lone representative 2-2 on the Commission on International Migration and his tremendous 2-3 dedication to the people of the United States was justly rewarded 2-4 when the Vietman Veterans of America named him Legislator of the 2-5 Year in 1989 and 1994; and 2-6 WHEREAS, Known for his integrity and determination, 2-7 Congressman Bryant throughout his career understood the importance 2-8 of voting his conscience, and this quality endeared him to 2-9 countless Texans during his 30-plus years of public service; 2-10 residents of the Lone Star State expect honesty, dedication, and 2-11 leadership from their elected officials, and John Bryant has 2-12 demonstrated these traits time and time again; now, therefore, be 2-13 it 2-14 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas 2-15 Legislature hereby commend the Honorable John Bryant for his 2-16 longtime service to the citizens of Texas and extend to him sincere 2-17 best wishes for continued success and happiness in the years to 2-18 come; and, be it further 2-19 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-20 prepared for Congressman Bryant as an expression of highest regard 2-21 by the Texas House of Representatives.
