R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, For many years, the Dallas community has benefitted 1-2 from the vision and leadership of Gladys I. Collins, and her 1-3 receipt of an award from the Texas Legislative Black Caucus 1-4 provides a most fitting opportunity to honor her for her 1-5 exceptional service; and 1-6 WHEREAS, A native of Dallas, Ms. Collins earned a bachelor's 1-7 degree from Prairie View A&M University before furthering her 1-8 studies with both a bachelor's degree and a master's degree from 1-9 the University of Minnesota; and 1-10 WHEREAS, She enjoyed a distinguished career as an educator 1-11 and a counselor at the elementary, high school, and university 1-12 levels, having served as an art teacher and a guidance counselor 1-13 with the Dallas Independent School District and as a guidance 1-14 counselor at Southern Methodist University; and 1-15 WHEREAS, This noteworthy woman continued to contribute to the 1-16 field of education in leadership capacities with the Dallas Negro 1-17 Art Club, the Dallas Association of Counselors, the Dallas Teachers 1-18 Council, and the National Education Association, and she has also 1-19 been honored with the Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award by 1-20 Lincoln High School; and 1-21 WHEREAS, In addition to her noteworthy career in education, 1-22 Ms. Collins was a valued employee of the City of Dallas-Dallas 1-23 County Welfare Department, and she has further served her community 1-24 through her participation in numerous worthy organizations, 2-1 including the Arthritis Foundation, the Margaret Kay Walker HIV 2-2 Center, the African American Museum, and the Dallas Museum of Art; 2-3 and 2-4 WHEREAS, She has also been active with the Cedar Crest 2-5 Neighborhood Association, Delta Sigma Theta and Phi Delta Kappa 2-6 sororities, and St. James Catholic Church; and 2-7 WHEREAS, Her remarkable involvement has brought her 2-8 well-deserved acclaim, for she has received the Community Service 2-9 Award from the South Dallas Business and Professional Women's Club 2-10 and the Volunteer of the Year Award from Links, Inc.; in addition, 2-11 Ms. Collins was named Clarice Tinsley's Hometown Hero by Channel 4, 2-12 and she has been listed in Who's Who of American Women; and 2-13 WHEREAS, Gladys Collins has enhanced the quality of life in 2-14 the Dallas community in numerous ways, and her exceptional 2-15 commitment is a source of inspiration to all who are privileged to 2-16 know her; now, therefore, be it 2-17 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas 2-18 Legislature hereby honor Gladys I. Collins for her exemplary 2-19 professional and civic involvement and extend to her heartfelt 2-20 congratulations on her receipt of an award from the Texas 2-21 Legislative Black Caucus; and, be it further 2-22 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-23 prepared for Ms. Collins as an expression of high regard by the 2-24 Texas House of Representatives.
