R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Dr. Mattie L. Londow has dedicated her life to the 1-2 service of her fellow Texans, and her many noteworthy 1-3 accomplishments as an educator and citizen are indeed worthy of 1-4 special praise and recognition; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Dr. Londow's commitment to academic excellence began 1-6 early, and she was named the valedictorian of her graduating class 1-7 at F. W. Gross High School in Victoria; after receiving her 1-8 bachelor's degree cum laude and her master's degree from Prairie 1-9 View A&M University, she went on to earn her doctorate from Texas 1-10 Woman's University, and has pursued further studies at The 1-11 University of Texas at Austin and North Texas State University; and 1-12 WHEREAS, She began her long and fruitful career in education 1-13 as a high school teacher, and since that time she has served in a 1-14 remarkable variety of positions, including work at the elementary 1-15 school level and as an associate professor and department head at 1-16 the university level; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Her long list of achievements culminated in her 1-18 taking on the job of principal at the elementary, middle school, 1-19 and high school levels in succession, and this unusual distinction 1-20 is an apt reflection of her formidable skills as an educator and 1-21 administrator; and 1-22 WHEREAS, Since her retirement in 1988, she has continued to 1-23 lend her wealth of knowledge and experience to educational 1-24 initiatives, serving on Port Arthur Independent School District 2-1 committees as well as acting as a mentor to young women in public 2-2 housing; and 2-3 WHEREAS, Deeply committed to extending a helping hand to the 2-4 less fortunate, she has also conducted a workshop on goal-setting 2-5 and self-esteem for inner-city youth and has completed training in 2-6 teaching adult literacy as part of the Port Arthur Literacy 2-7 Program; and 2-8 WHEREAS, A vital and valued member of the community, Dr. 2-9 Londow has given freely of her time and talent to a number of civic 2-10 bodies, and in addition to her long-standing membership in the 2-11 Greater Port Arthur Chamber of Commerce she has served as a vice 2-12 president of Garth House and of the Port Arthur City Council's City 2-13 Charter Change Committee; she has also been a director of the Port 2-14 Arthur Historical Society; and 2-15 WHEREAS, Through the years Dr. Londow has drawn strength and 2-16 sustenance from her association with First Christian Church, and 2-17 the congregation there has benefited from her participation as 2-18 worship leader, deaconess, and elder; and 2-19 WHEREAS, Mattie Londow has distinguished herself as an 2-20 outstanding educator, a gifted administrator, and a valuable asset 2-21 to her hometown of Port Arthur, and it is indeed fitting at this 2-22 time that she be recognized for her many contributions to her 2-23 fellow Texans; now, therefore, be it 2-24 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas 2-25 Legislature hereby honor Dr. Mattie L. Londow for her lifetime of 2-26 public service and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued 2-27 success and happiness in the future; and, be it further 3-1 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 3-2 prepared for Dr. Londow as an expression of high regard by the 3-3 Texas House of Representatives.
