R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to honor
1-2 Jamie Kitchen, Shell Salmon, Stacey Golden, Jeanna Poteet, and
1-3 Coach Robert Kelly of Sam Rayburn High School and Angie Gutierrez
1-4 and Coach Darla Kelly of Pasadena High School on being chosen to
1-5 attend the 1997 World Scholar-Athlete Games; and
1-6 WHEREAS, Conceived and organized by the Institute for
1-7 International Sport, the World Scholar-Athlete Games is an
1-8 international sport and cultural event founded to promote
1-9 understanding, acceptance, and friendship among the youth of the
1-10 world; and
1-11 WHEREAS, To be be held in Kingston and Newport, Rhode Island,
1-12 on June 22 through July 2, the 1997 games are the second such
1-13 international competition, and more than 2,200 participants from
1-14 125 countries and all 50 states are expected to attend; and
1-15 WHEREAS, Jamie Kitchen, Shell Salmon, Stacey Golden, Jeanna
1-16 Poteet, and Angie Gutierrez have qualified for the games through
1-17 their superb performances in the sport of swimming, as well as
1-18 because of their leadership qualities and academic records; but in
1-19 addition to competing in their chosen sport they will have an
1-20 opportunity to gain new knowledge of other cultures and countries
1-21 during their 11 days in Rhode Island; and
1-22 WHEREAS, By earning the right to participate in the World
1-23 Scholar-Athlete Games as representatives of the city of Pasadena
1-24 and the State of Texas, these exceptional young athletes, along
2-1 with their coaches, have achieved a remarkable feat, and they are
2-2 truly worthy of special legislative recognition at this time; now,
2-3 therefore, be it
2-4 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas
2-5 Legislature hereby congratulate Jamie Kitchen, Shell Salmon, Stacey
2-6 Golden, Jeanna Poteet, Angie Gutierrez, Coach Robert Kelly, and
2-7 Coach Darla Kelly on being chosen to attend the 1997 World
2-8 Scholar-Athlete Games and extend to them sincere best wishes for
2-9 success at that event and in all future endeavors; and, be it
2-10 further
2-11 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-12 prepared for these outstanding athletes and their coaches as an
2-13 expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
