No. 677 75R11344 JTR-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The Lone Star State is known throughout the world 1-2 for both its remarkable natural beauty and its rich artistic 1-3 heritage, and painter Carolyn Stallwitz of Dumas has winningly 1-4 combined these two typically Texan traditions to create moving and 1-5 memorable depictions of her native state; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Born in Abilene, Mrs. Stallwitz studied art and 1-7 education at West Texas State University in Canyon before settling 1-8 in Dumas; through the years, she has pursued a number of artistic 1-9 approaches, including drawing, silkscreening, and photography, but 1-10 it is for her watercolors that she is best known; and 1-11 WHEREAS, Her delicate renderings of rural scenes and wildlife 1-12 beautifully evoke the austere appeal of her Panhandle surroundings, 1-13 and she brings the practiced eye of an avid naturalist to her 1-14 representations of the birds and animals indigenous to the area; 1-15 and 1-16 WHEREAS, Recognized by her fellow artists as a painter of 1-17 substance, Mrs. Stallwitz has taken her work across the country, 1-18 participating in juried exhibitions as well as mounting her own 1-19 one-woman shows, and her popularity with art lovers is evidenced by 1-20 the many private collections that include her work; and 1-21 WHEREAS, Mrs. Stallwitz's contributions to the community 1-22 extend far beyond her artistic achievements, and she has given 1-23 freely of her time and talent to numerous worthwhile endeavors; a 1-24 former Moore County commissioner, she was the first woman elected 2-1 in the county, and she is a vital and valued member of First 2-2 Presbyterian Church; and 2-3 WHEREAS, Carolyn Stallwitz is a gifted painter as well as a 2-4 public-spirited citizen, and it is indeed fitting that she be 2-5 recognized for her many noteworthy accomplishments; now, therefore, 2-6 be it 2-7 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas 2-8 Legislature hereby request the Texas State Artist Committee to 2-9 designate Carolyn Stallwitz the Texas Artist of the Year in the 2-10 category of two-dimensional media for the year beginning November 2-11 1, 1997, and ending October 31, 1998.
