                                 R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, The family and many friends of Luther Nicholson of

 1-2     Garland were greatly saddened by his death on February 7, 1996, at

 1-3     the age of 74, and we join them in mourning his passing; and

 1-4           WHEREAS, A graduate of Southern Methodist University,

 1-5     Mr. Nicholson also attended The University of Texas and Duke

 1-6     University; a World War II veteran, he served for four years as

 1-7     finance officer to the Middle East Service Command, earning the

 1-8     rank of captain; and

 1-9           WHEREAS, In 1948, Mr. Nicholson became one of the founders of

1-10     Varo Inc., and his astute leadership and financial acumen helped

1-11     the company grow from its origins in a Garland garage to an

1-12     electronics powerhouse with an international workforce of more than

1-13     2,000 employees; and

1-14           WHEREAS, In addition to his career with Varo, which he served

1-15     as president from 1970 until his retirement, Mr. Nicholson was also

1-16     a founding partner of the accounting firm Nicholson and Clopton;

1-17     admired and respected by his professional peers, he lent his

1-18     talents to a number of corporate boards, including Garland Bank and

1-19     Trust, Micropac Industries, Varo Optical, and Biometrics

1-20     Instrument; and

1-21           WHEREAS, A vital and valued member of the community,

1-22     Mr. Nicholson gave freely of his time and energy to a number of

1-23     worthwhile endeavors, including the Garland Park and Recreation

1-24     board and the Dallas County Park and Open Space board; he was an

 2-1     active member of the Dallas Chapter of American Institute of CPAs

 2-2     and the Financial Executives Institute, and his presence at Garland

 2-3     Lodge 441 AF & AM and Hella Temple Shrine was a welcome one; and

 2-4           WHEREAS, Mr. Nicholson drew great strength and inspiration

 2-5     from his fellow worshipers at First United Methodist Church, and

 2-6     the congregation there was fortunate to engage his services as

 2-7     church treasurer, a post he held for 20 years; and

 2-8           WHEREAS, Throughout his life, Mr. Nicholson enjoyed the solid

 2-9     support and warm affection of his close-knit and loving family, and

2-10     they remember him first and foremost as a devoted husband, father,

2-11     and grandfather; and

2-12           WHEREAS, Though Luther Nicholson is greatly missed, he is

2-13     recalled with fondness by his family, friends, and business

2-14     associates, and it is indeed fitting to pay tribute to his life and

2-15     career at this time; now, therefore, be it

2-16           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

2-17     Legislature hereby honor the memory of Luther Nicholson and extend

2-18     sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, Ruth

2-19     Nicholson; to his daughter and son-in-law, Penelope Nicholson and

2-20     Dennis Powell; to his son and daughter-in-law, Dr. David Nicholson

2-21     and Cindy Nicholson; to his brother and sister-in-law, John W.

2-22     Nicholson and Billie Nicholson; to his sister and brother-in-law,

2-23     Mattye Markley and Captain John H. Markley; and to his

2-24     grandchildren, Jonathan and Sarah Nicholson and Clint, Darcie, and

2-25     Luke Nicholson; and to his other relatives and many friends; and,

2-26     be it further

2-27           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

 3-1     prepared for the members of his family as an expression of high

 3-2     regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
