R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, The recent passing of Greta Jackson Newman has
1-2 brought a great loss to the family and many friends of this
1-3 esteemed woman; and
1-4 WHEREAS, A lifelong resident of Garland, Mrs. Newman was born
1-5 August 15, 1920, the only child of Ben C. and Mattie Laura Jackson;
1-6 she was graduated from Garland High School before furthering her
1-7 education at North Texas State University, and on September 17,
1-8 1940, she married her childhood sweetheart, Elmer Newman; and
1-9 WHEREAS, She and her husband enjoyed a long and fulfilling
1-10 marriage that grew in love and understanding with each passing day,
1-11 and their remarkable 56-year union was an inspiration to all who
1-12 knew them; and
1-13 WHEREAS, While her husband ran the family's car dealership
1-14 and volunteered his time to the school board and other worthwhile
1-15 community endeavors, Mrs. Newman continually supported him in his
1-16 efforts and worked to provide a warm and nurturing home for the
1-17 couple and their two children, Richard and Karen; in addition, she
1-18 was an active member of the First Methodist Church of Garland for
1-19 more than 40 years, and she provided fellowship and friendship to
1-20 many in that congregation; and
1-21 WHEREAS, Travel provided one of the greatest joys in
1-22 Mrs. Newman's life, and she and her husband enjoyed extended trips
1-23 throughout North America, Europe, and Australia; a highlight of
1-24 their journeys together was a trip to China shortly after the
2-1 nation reopened its doors to Western visitors, and this
2-2 once-in-a-lifetime experience provided them with many cherished
2-3 memories; and
2-4 WHEREAS, Greta Jackson Newman had a tremendous impact on the
2-5 lives of those around her, and her generosity and compassion will
2-6 not be forgotten; although her presence is gone from us now, her
2-7 unique spirit will undoubtedly live on in the hearts of all those
2-8 whose lives she touched; now, therefore, be it
2-9 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas
2-10 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Greta Jackson Newman
2-11 and extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to her
2-12 beloved husband, Elmer Newman; to her children, Richard Newman and
2-13 Karen Newman Matetich; to her three grandchildren, Michael
2-14 Matetich, Ashley Matetich, and Wendy Newman Santiago; to her
2-15 great-grandsons, Andrew Santiago and Michael Matetich III; and to
2-16 all the relatives and many friends of this distinguished woman;
2-17 and, be it further
2-18 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-19 prepared for the members of her family and that when the Texas
2-20 House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
2-21 Greta Jackson Newman.
