                                 R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, Hunger remains one of the crucial social issues of

 1-2     our time, and several El Paso organizations have joined together in

 1-3     an effort to combat this persistent problem; and

 1-4           WHEREAS, The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC)

 1-5     of El Paso, in conjunction with the United States Postal Service,

 1-6     the AFL-CIO, and the United Way, with the National Rural Letter

 1-7     Carriers Association, will participate in the NALC National Food

 1-8     Drive in El Paso on May 10, 1997; and

 1-9           WHEREAS, These fine organizations have been serving the

1-10     citizens of El Paso County for more than 30 years, and their

1-11     members remain committed to supporting the fight to end hunger and

1-12     malnutrition; and

1-13           WHEREAS, The NALC National Food Drive is a one-day event

1-14     developed to collect nonperishable foods for the nation's food

1-15     banks; in 1995, more than 65 tons of food was collected for El

1-16     Paso's Paso Del Norte Food Bank, which provides needy families and

1-17     individuals in the El Paso area with nutritious meals; and

1-18           WHEREAS, This year, food drive volunteers hope to collect 75

1-19     tons of food for El Paso County's hungry citizens, and with the

1-20     help of the area's generous residents, this mark will not only be

1-21     achieved, but surpassed; now, therefore, be it

1-22           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

1-23     Legislature hereby recognize May 10, 1997, as El Paso NALC National

1-24     Food Drive Day and encourage the good citizens of El Paso County to

 2-1     participate in and support this noteworthy event.
