                                 R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, The James Madison High School boys' basketball team

 1-2     has achieved the pinnacle of success by winning the 1997 University

 1-3     Interscholastic League (UIL) Class 3-A state championship; and

 1-4           WHEREAS, Having finished as runner-up in last year's Class

 1-5     4-A state title game, the Trojans refused to be denied the coveted

 1-6     state crown on this occasion, coming from behind to defeat Tulia

 1-7     High School 64-58 to claim the championship and complete their

 1-8     storybook season with a record of 28 wins against only 7 defeats;

 1-9     and

1-10           WHEREAS, The season's outstanding accomplishments were the

1-11     result of total dedication to the team concept by players Carl

1-12     McClenton, Addae Houston, Robert Hart, Sherman Tyler, Jerome

1-13     Rogers, Archie Beason, Terrance Samuel, Tonaris Johnson, Lamon

1-14     Hartfield, Tyrone Palmer, Ellis Rogers, Damon Ford, Latronio

1-15     Sheffield, and Larry House; and

1-16           WHEREAS, Although each team member made significant

1-17     contributions to the Trojans' overall success, several players also

1-18     attained individual distinction; Archie Beason was chosen as most

1-19     valuable player at the Class 3-A state tournament, and Tyrone

1-20     Palmer and Latronio Sheffield were selected to the all state

1-21     tournament team; and

1-22           WHEREAS, Head Coach Ellis B. Kidd, who was named Class 3-A

1-23     Coach of the Year, provided outstanding leadership and guidance to

1-24     his young charges, enabling each to perform to the best of his

 2-1     ability, and he was ably supported in his efforts by assistant

 2-2     coaches Samuel West, Jr., and Larry Lewis and manager Jeffery

 2-3     Marshall; and

 2-4           WHEREAS, Throughout the proud history of James Madison High

 2-5     School, its faculty, staff, and students have endeavored to fulfill

 2-6     the words of the school's mission statement "knowledge today, the

 2-7     world tomorrow" and this crowning athletic achievement is but one

 2-8     manifestation of the success that the pursuit of that goal has

 2-9     brought; and

2-10           WHEREAS, This dedicated group of young men, along with their

2-11     coaches and staff, are a source of tremendous pride to the students

2-12     and faculty at James Madison High School and their many supporters

2-13     in the community, and their significant contributions to the

2-14     school's legacy are indeed worthy of special legislative

2-15     recognition at this time; now, therefore, be it

2-16           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

2-17     Legislature hereby congratulate the members of the James Madison

2-18     High School boys' basketball team on winning the 1997 UIL Class 3-A

2-19     state championship and extend to them sincere best wishes for

2-20     continued success in all future endeavors; and, be it further

2-21           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

2-22     prepared for the team members and coaching staff as an expression

2-23     of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
