R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, On June 14, 1997, the people of Robertson County 1-2 will gather for the dedication of an Official Texas Historical 1-3 Marker in the county's Franklin Cemetery, and this marker will 1-4 stand as a symbol of our continuing commitment to preserving our 1-5 state's rich history; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Founded in 1872, the community of Franklin was 1-7 originally known as Morgan, but the name was changed seven years 1-8 later when the town applied for a post office; as part of an effort 1-9 to have Franklin designated the county seat in 1880, a five-acre 1-10 plot of land was deeded to Robertson County for use as a graveyard, 1-11 and it was named the Franklin Cemetery; and 1-12 WHEREAS, Since the first recorded burial at the site in 1869, 1-13 more than 1,300 individuals have been interred in this historic 1-14 resting ground, including such prominent Texans as former state 1-15 legislators E. A. Decherd and J. L. Goodman; veterans of the Civil 1-16 War, the Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, Korea, 1-17 and Vietnam are also buried here, as well as C. N. Brignance, a 1-18 veteran of the War of 1812; and 1-19 WHEREAS, More than a century later, the cemetery is still in 1-20 use, and the people of Franklin and Robertson County continue to 1-21 appropriately preserve this sacred site for future generations; and 1-22 WHEREAS, The unique and colorful history of the Lone Star 1-23 State is a vital part of our shared culture as Texans, and the 1-24 preservation of the state's relics and historic sites is a noble 2-1 cause deserving of highest praise and recognition; now, therefore, 2-2 be it 2-3 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas 2-4 Legislature hereby commemorate the dedication of an Official Texas 2-5 Historical Marker at the site of the Franklin Cemetery and commend 2-6 local residents and the Texas Historical Commission for preserving 2-7 this chapter in our state's proud history.
