By Hernandez H.R. No. 791 75R13751 BNL-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Community action agencies in this state work to 1-2 assist low-income Texans in breaking the cycle of poverty and 1-3 achieving self-sufficiency, and these agencies are indeed deserving 1-4 of special legislative recognition; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Community action agencies have been serving 1-6 low-income families in the Lone Star State for more than 30 years; 1-7 and 1-8 WHEREAS, Throughout those years, the agencies have conducted 1-9 numerous programs to meet the needs of poverty-level Texans, 1-10 providing essential services in areas such as housing, energy 1-11 assistance, home rehabilitation and weatherproofing, job training 1-12 and placement, emergency assistance, counseling, health, education, 1-13 and nutrition; one of the most well known and successful 1-14 initiatives is the Head Start program, which promotes the health 1-15 and well being of disadvantaged preschool-aged children; and 1-16 WHEREAS, Community action agencies, in partnership with 1-17 elected officials, the private sector, and citizens, continue to 1-18 identify poverty conditions while working toward enlightened 1-19 solutions, and the members of this chamber are pleased to have this 1-20 opportunity to promote their notable efforts; now, therefore, be it 1-21 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas 1-22 Legislature hereby recognize May 4-10, 1997, as Texas Community 1-23 Action Week and encourage its observance throughout the state.
