                                 R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, Young people are the Lone Star State's most valuable

 1-2     natural resource, and the dedicated professionals entrusted with

 1-3     their education are indeed deserving of our profound gratitude and

 1-4     admiration; Langston G. Knowles is one such notable Texan, and his

 1-5     many accomplishments as an educator are truly worthy of special

 1-6     praise and recognition at this time; and

 1-7           WHEREAS, For more than 40 years, Mr. Knowles has dedicated

 1-8     himself to the worthwhile work of shaping young minds, and in

 1-9     imparting the precision of mathematics to his students,

1-10     Mr. Knowles has opened to them new worlds of knowledge and

1-11     opportunity; and

1-12           WHEREAS, A product of the Houston public school system,

1-13     Mr. Knowles earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in

1-14     mathematics from Texas Southern University before pursuing further

1-15     studies at The University of Texas at Austin; and

1-16           WHEREAS, Since 1957, he has taught at Houston's Booker T.

1-17     Washington High School, and his presence there has been an

1-18     influential one; in addition to chairing the math department,

1-19     Mr. Knowles also assists his charges in preparing for academic

1-20     achievement tests, and his stature as a respected role model for

1-21     students is reflected in his  sponsorship of the senior class and

1-22     of the "GENTS" young men's social club; and

1-23           WHEREAS, His excellence as an instructor is evident from the

1-24     many teaching honors he has been accorded; the first place

 2-1     recipient of the Outstanding Mathematics Educator Award of

 2-2     Excellence from the Houston Council of Teachers of Mathematics, he

 2-3     has also been named the Booker T. Washington High School Teacher of

 2-4     the Year and has received the Outstanding Educator Award from The

 2-5     University of Texas; and

 2-6           WHEREAS, Langston G. Knowles has dedicated a lifetime to the

 2-7     instruction and empowerment of young people, and we join his

 2-8     family, friends, and many admirers in paying tribute to his

 2-9     remarkable accomplishments as an educator, mentor, and friend to

2-10     youth; now, therefore, be it

2-11           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

2-12     Legislature hereby honor Langston G. Knowles on his many years of

2-13     service to the community and extend to him sincere best wishes for

2-14     continued success and happiness in the years to come; and, be it

2-15     further

2-16           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

2-17     prepared for Mr. Knowles as an expression of high regard by the

2-18     Texas House of Representatives.
