R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, On May 2, 1997, Radcliffe College President Linda S. 1-2 Wilson will be in Austin as part of the "Radcliffe on the Road" 1-3 project, which brings the school's initiatives in education, 1-4 research, and public policy to women across the country, and it is 1-5 a pleasure and a privilege to welcome this distinguished visitor to 1-6 the Texas State Capitol; and 1-7 WHEREAS, A graduate of Tulane University's Sophie Newcomb 1-8 College, Dr. Wilson received her doctorate in inorganic chemistry 1-9 from the University of Wisconsin, and she enjoyed a successful 1-10 career as a teacher and researcher before embarking on her career 1-11 as an administrator; a former vice president for research at the 1-12 University of Michigan, in 1989 she became Radcliffe's seventh 1-13 president; and 1-14 WHEREAS, Internationally renowned for more than a century as 1-15 a model of academic excellence, Radcliffe College remains the 1-16 standard-bearer for women's education in America, and the school's 1-17 stated mission, "to advance society by advancing women," is aptly 1-18 reflected both in its commitment to fostering scholarship by and 1-19 for women and in its many programs designed to engage women in 1-20 shaping policy on the issues of the day; and 1-21 WHEREAS, Dr. Wilson's visit to Austin will bring her hosts 1-22 new insight and perspective on the evolving role of women in 1-23 academia, as well as on the rapidly changing relationship among 1-24 universities, government, and industry, and her remarkable breadth 2-1 of achievement and practical experience are welcome assets to 2-2 Texans as we chart the state's course through the next century; 2-3 now, therefore, be it 2-4 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas 2-5 Legislature hereby welcome Dr. Linda S. Wilson to the State Capitol 2-6 and extend to her sincere best wishes for an enjoyable and 2-7 rewarding visit to the Lone Star State; and, be it further 2-8 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-9 prepared for Dr. Wilson as an expression of high regard by the 2-10 Texas House of Representatives.
