R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, The passing of Elizabeth "Betty" Daley Cheever on

 1-2     April 22, 1997, at the age of 100, has brought a great loss to the

 1-3     family and many friends of this distinguished San Antonio resident;

 1-4     and

 1-5           WHEREAS, A native of Boston, she was born June 1, 1896, and

 1-6     met her future husband, Charles E. Cheever, Sr., while working in

 1-7     the Boston Public Library; the couple were wed May 16, 1927, and

 1-8     they nurtured a deeply fulfilling union that spanned 58 years until

 1-9     his passing; and

1-10           WHEREAS, Mrs. Cheever cofounded San Antonio's Broadway

1-11     National Bank with her husband in 1941, and she went on to operate

1-12     the bank when Mr. Cheever served in World War II; a woman of

1-13     immense vision, she also offered wise and thoughtful guidance on a

1-14     host of important issues as a board member for nearly four decades;

1-15     and

1-16           WHEREAS, She maintained an active involvement in the San

1-17     Antonio community through the years and gave generously of her time

1-18     and talents to  assist numerous organizations, including the Santa

1-19     Rosa Children's Hospital Foundation, the San Antonio Bar Auxiliary,

1-20     the Military-Civilian Club, St. Monica's Guild, and St. Peter's

1-21     Catholic Church; and

1-22           WHEREAS, Mrs. Cheever and her husband were deeply committed

1-23     to education issues, and they provided crucial support to the

1-24     University of the Incarnate Word; they donated the Cheever

 2-1     Downstage Theater to the institution, and Mrs. Cheever generously

 2-2     started a scholarship fund, enabling many deserving students to

 2-3     further their education; and

 2-4           WHEREAS, In recognition of her stalwart commitment, the

 2-5     university feted her with both an honorary degree and the Isigne

 2-6     Verbum Award for outstanding service to the school, the Sisters of

 2-7     Charity, and the community; and

 2-8           WHEREAS, Betty Cheever left an indelible mark on the

 2-9     community she was proud to call home, and though her special

2-10     presence will be deeply missed, her memory will long endure in the

2-11     hearts and minds of all who knew and loved her; now, therefore, be

2-12     it

2-13           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

2-14     Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Elizabeth "Betty"

2-15     Daley Cheever and extend sincere sympathy to the members of her

2-16     family: to her son and daughter-in-law, Charles E. Cheever, Jr.,

2-17     and Sally Cheever; to her daughter and son-in-law, Jane Cheever

2-18     Powell and Tom Powell; to her grandchildren, Suzanne Cheever

2-19     Goudge, Jim Goudge, CeCe Cheever, Elizabeth Powell Bricken, Barry

2-20     Bricken, Jean Cheever, Joan Cheever Quinn, Dennis Quinn, Charles E.

2-21     Cheever III, and Christopher H. Cheever; to her eight

2-22     great-grandchildren; and to her many other friends and relatives;

2-23     and, be it further      RESOLVED, That an official copy of this

2-24     resolution be prepared for the members of her family and that when

2-25     the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in

2-26     memory of Elizabeth "Betty" Daley Cheever.
