                                 R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, The passing of baseball Hall-of-Famer Mickey Charles

 1-2     Mantle on August 13, 1995, at the age of 63, brought a great loss

 1-3     to the family, friends, and fans of this legendary gentleman; and

 1-4           WHEREAS, Mr. Mantle underwent a successful organ transplant

 1-5     on June 8, 1995, but the effects of the cancer that had infected

 1-6     his liver proved too much for the man known affectionately as "the

 1-7     Mick," and his untimely death two months later shocked a nation

 1-8     that had long adored him; and

 1-9           WHEREAS, One of baseball's all-time greats, Mr. Mantle led

1-10     the New York Yankees to seven world championships and 12 American

1-11     League pennants during his illustrious 18-year career; in 1956, he

1-12     won the coveted triple crown, and he was honored three times as the

1-13     American League's Most Valuable Player; and

1-14           WHEREAS, Mr. Mantle's second chance at life had a profound

1-15     effect on him, compelling him to establish a legacy that one day

1-16     will hopefully have as much impact on the world as did his many

1-17     years of excellence on the baseball diamond; and

1-18           WHEREAS, The Mickey Mantle Foundation seeks to stem the

1-19     shortage of transplant organs so that those who require transplant

1-20     surgery can undergo the operation without delay; by encouraging

1-21     individuals to donate tissue and organs, the foundation hopes to

1-22     eliminate the waiting period faced by many people and thereby allay

1-23     the uncertainty of this emotionally difficult process; and

1-24           WHEREAS, Mickey Mantle made his name as an athlete of great

 2-1     power, speed, and endurance, and his prowess as a baseball player

 2-2     will long be remembered; the life and career of this great American

 2-3     icon will surely be used as a measure for future generations, and

 2-4     the courage and commitment he displayed during the final months of

 2-5     his life are emblematic of the humanitarian mission of the

 2-6     foundation that bears his name; now, therefore, be it

 2-7           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

 2-8     Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Mickey Charles Mantle

 2-9     and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family and to the

2-10     many friends of this extraordinary gentleman; and, be it further

2-11           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

2-12     prepared for the members of his family as an expression of high

2-13     regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
