                                 R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, The family and many friends of Walter Earl Steimel

 1-2     were greatly saddened by his passing on May 3, 1997, at the age of

 1-3     69, and we join them in bidding a reluctant farewell to this

 1-4     noteworthy Texan; and

 1-5           WHEREAS, A native of Wichita Falls, Mr. Steimel served with

 1-6     distinction in the United States Navy during and after the Korean

 1-7     War, serving aboard aircraft carriers in the Pacific before

 1-8     receiving his honorable discharge as a lieutenant commander; and

 1-9           WHEREAS, On graduating from The University of Texas School of

1-10     Law in 1958, Mr. Steimel embarked on his career as an attorney,

1-11     first in Wichita Falls and then in Fort Worth, where he continued

1-12     to practice until his retirement in 1995; and

1-13           WHEREAS, A vital and valued member of the community,

1-14     Mr. Steimel was integral to the success of a number of professional

1-15     and public interest groups, including the Tarrant County Medical

1-16     Assistants Society, the American Arthritis Association, and the

1-17     Texas Trial Lawyers Association; he was also a cofounder and past

1-18     president of the Tarrant County Trial Lawyers Association; and

1-19           WHEREAS, Mr. Steimel further gave of himself through his

1-20     dedicated efforts in the political arena; an influential advocate

1-21     for consumer protection and other progressive causes, he was the

1-22     Democratic Party nominee for state senator from Tarrant County in

1-23     1974; and

1-24           WHEREAS, Throughout his remarkable career, Mr. Steimel drew

 2-1     strength and sustenance from his close-knit family, and they will

 2-2     remember him first and foremost as a devoted husband, father, and

 2-3     grandfather; and

 2-4           WHEREAS, Although he will be missed, Walter Steimel will live

 2-5     on in the hearts of those who knew him, and his many contributions

 2-6     to the Lone Star State will not soon be forgotten; now, therefore,

 2-7     be it

 2-8           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

 2-9     Legislature hereby honor the memory of Walter Earl Steimel and

2-10     extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife,

2-11     Margaret Brady Steimel; to his son, Walter Earl Steimel, Jr.; to

2-12     his daughter, Stacy Elizabeth Steimel de Tomic; to his

2-13     grandchildren; and to his other family members and many friends;

2-14     and, be it further

2-15           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

2-16     prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas

2-17     House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of

2-18     Walter Earl Steimel.
