R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Becky Lee Meza is a talented and accomplished young 1-2 lady, and her selection to star in a major motion picture is a 1-3 source of great pride to her family, to her friends, and to all 1-4 Texans; and 1-5 WHEREAS, This remarkable 11-year-old from Combes was chosen 1-6 over five other finalists to portray the late Tejano singer Selena 1-7 Quintanilla Perez in the movie Selena; Miss Meza plays the role of 1-8 Selena as a young girl, while actress Jennifer Lopez portrays the 1-9 singer as an adult; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Known throughout her community for her powerful 1-11 singing voice, Miss Meza has performed publicly at weddings and as 1-12 an opening act for the group Mazz, and she has also competed in 1-13 local Selena look-alike contests; to win the coveted role of Selena 1-14 as a girl, this determined young lady had to stand out in a field 1-15 of 20,000 girls vying for the part; and 1-16 WHEREAS, A fifth-grade student at Calvary Christian School in 1-17 Harlingen, Miss Meza is the daughter of Joe and Yolanda Meza, and 1-18 their untiring love and support have undoubtedly aided their 1-19 daughter in pursuing her ambitious goals; another of these goals 1-20 will be realized on April 1, 1997, when her CD recording, 1-21 appropriately titled Suenos Realizados, is released, thus 1-22 introducing countless more Tejano fans to this up-and-coming young 1-23 singer; and 1-24 WHEREAS, The selection of a Rio Grande Valley resident to 2-1 portray one of the Lone Star State's most memorable and beloved 2-2 stars is indeed an occasion worthy of special recognition, and 2-3 Becky Lee Meza's dedication to this demanding role has earned her 2-4 the wholehearted support and encouragement of her fellow Texans; 2-5 now, therefore, be it 2-6 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas 2-7 Legislature hereby congratulate Becky Lee Meza on her selection for 2-8 a leading role in the movie Selena and extend to her warmest best 2-9 wishes for success in this and in all of her future endeavors; and, 2-10 be it further 2-11 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-12 prepared for Miss Meza as an expression of high regard by the Texas 2-13 House of Representatives.
