R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, United States Congressman Tom DeLay has
1-2 distinguished himself as a member of both the Texas and U.S. House
1-3 of Representatives, and his many years of service in this regard
1-4 are indeed deserving of special legislative recognition; and
1-5 WHEREAS, A native Texan, Congressman DeLay currently
1-6 represents the 22nd District of Texas, which includes Brazoria,
1-7 Fort Bend, and Harris counties; he was recently elected to his
1-8 sixth term in office and, as majority whip, he ranks third in the
1-9 leadership hierarchy; and
1-10 WHEREAS, This remarkable Texan began his political career in
1-11 1978, when he was elected to the first of three terms in the Texas
1-12 House of Representatives; his triumph was especially notable in
1-13 that he was the first Republican ever elected to the house from
1-14 Fort Bend County, and his presence greatly contributed to the
1-15 betterment of this state throughout his fine tenure; and
1-16 WHEREAS, Congressman DeLay is a coauthor of the "Contract
1-17 with America," and he is the founder of Project Relief, a
1-18 broad-based coalition of individuals and organizations that
1-19 advocates the reform of federal regulations and excessive
1-20 government spending; in addition, he is a member of the House
1-21 Appropriations Committee and also serves on subcommittees for
1-22 transportation, veterans' affairs, housing and urban development,
1-23 and independent agencies; and
1-24 WHEREAS, Congressman DeLay is a 1970 graduate of the
2-1 University of Houston and spent part of his youth in Venezuela,
2-2 where his father worked as an oil drilling contractor; a devoted
2-3 husband and father, he and his wife, Christine DeLay, are residents
2-4 of Sugar Land, where they raised their daughter, Danielle, and are
2-5 members of the Sugar Creek Baptist Church; and
2-6 WHEREAS, Tom DeLay has devoted his life to representing his
2-7 fellow citizens within the framework of the democratic system, and
2-8 the members of this chamber are proud to recognize this dynamic
2-9 Texan for his dedication and commitment to excellence at this time;
2-10 now, therefore, be it
2-11 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas
2-12 Legislature hereby declare May 30, 1997, Tom DeLay Day in Texas in
2-13 honor of this noteworthy individual's longtime service to the
2-14 citizens of the Lone Star State; and, be it further
2-15 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-16 prepared for Congressman DeLay as an expression of high regard by
2-17 the Texas House of Representatives.
