R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The Galveston community has greatly benefited from 1-2 the vision and leadership of Dr. Janice K. Smith, and her receipt 1-3 of the Rabbi Henry Cohen Humanitarian Award provides a most fitting 1-4 opportunity to honor her for her outstanding service; and 1-5 WHEREAS, The accolade pays homage to its namesake, who was 1-6 highly regarded for his efforts in behalf of immigrants on 1-7 Galveston Island at the turn of the century, and it recognizes 1-8 modern-day citizens for their contributions to the community; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Dr. Smith is medical director of the Galveston 1-10 County Health District Clinics, and she was chosen to receive this 1-11 prestigious honor because of her work with the Teen Health Center, 1-12 which she was instrumental in creating; and 1-13 WHEREAS, Under her guidance, the center has established 1-14 health care clinics at Ball High School and Central Middle School 1-15 in Galveston and at Barbor Elementary School in Dickinson; clinic 1-16 staff members work to reduce the teenage pregnancy rate at the high 1-17 school and the absentee rate at all the schools; and 1-18 WHEREAS, In addition, this respected physician played a vital 1-19 role in coordinating a medical mission to Nicaragua whose 1-20 participants treated more than 1,400 individuals in one week and 1-21 administered more than 1,300 vaccinations to those in need; her 1-22 noteworthy efforts in these and other initiatives have earned her 1-23 the heartfelt gratitude of countless people; and 1-24 WHEREAS, A devoted family member, Dr. Smith is the wife of 2-1 Dr. Eric Smith, an employee of The University of Texas Medical 2-2 Branch at Galveston, and the proud mother of two sons, Dave and 2-3 Ben, and she takes pleasure and satisfaction in their many 2-4 accomplishments; and 2-5 WHEREAS, Janice Smith has enhanced the quality of life in 2-6 Galveston in numerous ways, and her exceptional commitment is a 2-7 source of inspiration to all who are privileged to know and work 2-8 with her; now, therefore, be it 2-9 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas 2-10 Legislature hereby honor Dr. Janice K. Smith for her exemplary 2-11 professional involvement and extend to her warmest congratulations 2-12 on her receipt of the Rabbi Henry Cohen Humanitarian Award; and, be 2-13 it further 2-14 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-15 prepared for Dr. Smith as an expression of high regard by the Texas 2-16 House of Representatives.
