R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, For many years, the San Antonio community has 1-2 benefited from the vision and leadership of Betty Lewis Williams, 1-3 and her receipt of an Outstanding Texan Award for Education from 1-4 the Texas Legislative Black Caucus provides a most fitting 1-5 opportunity to honor her for her exceptional service; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Mrs. Williams earned both a bachelor's degree and a 1-7 master's degree from Our Lady of the Lake University; she began her 1-8 notable career as an English teacher in 1967, and she went on to 1-9 serve as academic dean at Houston High School before becoming 1-10 principal of Jeff Davis Middle School; and 1-11 WHEREAS, She was named principal of Sam Houston High School 1-12 in 1993, in which capacity she continues to have a profound effect 1-13 on public education in the community; and 1-14 WHEREAS, Mrs. Williams has further contributed to her chosen 1-15 field through her involvement with several professional 1-16 organizations, including the South Texas Middle School Association, 1-17 the San Antonio Teachers Council, and the local, state, and 1-18 national chapters of the Association for Counseling and 1-19 Development; and 1-20 WHEREAS, In addition, she has been active with the East Side 1-21 Education Council and the Community Advisory Board at St. Philip's 1-22 College and the Martin Luther King Commission, and for 12 years, 1-23 she was a member of the Scholars Committee at the Minnie Stevens 1-24 Piper Foundation; she was recognized for her exemplary service as 2-1 an educator when she was inducted into the Education Hall of Fame 2-2 by Phi Delta Kappa National Sorority in 1993; and 2-3 WHEREAS, Mrs. Williams has maintained her active involvement 2-4 in the community through her participation in several worthy 2-5 groups, including Leadership San Antonio, the N.A.A.C.P., and 2-6 Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., which honored her as Outstanding 2-7 Neophyte in 1981; and 2-8 WHEREAS, In all her endeavors, she has enjoyed the love and 2-9 support of her husband, George L. Williams, who is employed by the 2-10 United States Army Corps of Engineers, and sons, Robert Lewis and 2-11 Rodney Lewis; and 2-12 WHEREAS, Betty Williams has enhanced the quality of life in 2-13 the San Antonio community in numerous ways, and her exceptional 2-14 commitment is a source of inspiration to all who are privileged to 2-15 know her; now, therefore, be it 2-16 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas 2-17 Legislature hereby honor Betty Lewis Williams for her noteworthy 2-18 professional and civic involvement and extend to her heartfelt 2-19 congratulations on her receipt of an Outstanding Texan Award from 2-20 the Texas Legislative Black Caucus; and, be it further 2-21 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-22 prepared for Mrs. Williams as an expression of high regard by the 2-23 Texas House of Representatives.
