R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to honor 1-2 Freddie Cates of Rockdale High School on winning the Class 3-A 1-3 discus competition at the 1997 University Interscholastic League 1-4 (UIL) Track and Field Championships; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Although rain delayed the discus event at Royal 1-6 Memorial Stadium for several hours, this superb young athlete made 1-7 the most of his opportunity when it finally arrived, handily 1-8 winning the coveted gold medal with a throw of 172 feet, 4 inches; 1-9 and 1-10 WHEREAS, He captured the school's first discus championship 1-11 in over two decades despite recently having suffered an injury to 1-12 his knee that required reconstructive surgery; and 1-13 WHEREAS, Having ascended to the highest plateau in high 1-14 school competition, he plans to continue his athletic career next 1-15 year as a member of the Tarleton State track and field team; and 1-16 WHEREAS, Freddie Cates is a source of tremendous pride to his 1-17 family, the students and faculty at Rockdale High School, and his 1-18 many supporters in the community, and his exceptional athletic 1-19 achievement is indeed worthy of special recognition; now, 1-20 therefore, be it 1-21 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas 1-22 Legislature hereby congratulate Freddie Cates on winning the Class 1-23 3-A gold medal in the discus event at the 1997 UIL State Track and 1-24 Field Championships and extend to him sincere best wishes for 2-1 continued happiness and success in the future; now, therefore, be 2-2 it 2-3 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-4 prepared for Freddie Cates as an expression of high regard by the 2-5 Texas House of Representatives.
