R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, On May 22, 1997, Dr. Kenneth B. Porter will be 1-2 honored for his many contributions to the field of crop breeding at 1-3 the Panhandle Ag Day celebration near Bushland; and 1-4 WHEREAS, A native of Kansas, Dr. Porter has been involved in 1-5 the study of agronomy for more than 50 years and has been active in 1-6 the Agronomy Society of America and the Crop Science Society of 1-7 America; his advancements in the production of modern wheat 1-8 varieties have established him as one of the preeminent members of 1-9 his profession, and his unassuming and congenial nature has earned 1-10 him the admiration of countless peers; and 1-11 WHEREAS, Dr. Porter is an alumnus of Kansas State University, 1-12 Iowa State University, and Texas A&M University, for which he 1-13 currently serves as a professor emeritus; he has been associated 1-14 with the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station in Amarillo since 1-15 1947, and, despite officially retiring from The Texas A&M 1-16 University System in 1988, he has continued his involvement in 1-17 agricultural research; and 1-18 WHEREAS, In 1982, Dr. Porter was recognized by Progressive 1-19 Farmer Magazine as its Man of the Year in Service to Texas 1-20 Agriculture; his extensive list of awards includes recognition by 1-21 the Texas Wheat Producers Board, the Panhandle Grain and Feed 1-22 Association, and the Texas Grain and Feed Association, and these 1-23 accolades are indicative of the high esteem in which this 1-24 commendable gentleman is held by his peers; and 2-1 WHEREAS, By developing wheat hybrids that are less 2-2 susceptible to the threats posed by insects and inclement weather 2-3 conditions, Dr. Porter has personally affected the lives of the 2-4 millions of individuals who rely on wheat products for sustenance; 2-5 in addition, his efforts have led to higher sustainable yields for 2-6 the world's farmers, and this circumstance has benefited both the 2-7 producers and the consumers of wheat; and 2-8 WHEREAS, This extraordinary man's tutelage and mentorship 2-9 have been invaluable assets to his colleagues and friends in the 2-10 agronomy community, and the members of this chamber are pleased to 2-11 recognize his dedication to this demanding profession and the 2-12 lasting impact of his work; now, therefore, be it 2-13 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas 2-14 Legislature hereby honor Dr. Kenneth B. Porter for his many 2-15 innovations in crop breeding and extend to him sincere best wishes 2-16 for continued success and happiness in the future; and, be it 2-17 further 2-18 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-19 prepared for Dr. Porter as an expression of high regard by the 2-20 Texas House of Representatives.
