                                 R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, The many friends and family of Raul Alderete were

 1-2     deeply saddened by his untimely death on May 18, 1997, at the age

 1-3     of 22, and the members of this chamber join them in mourning his

 1-4     passing; and

 1-5           WHEREAS, Born January 2, 1975, to Roy and Oralia Hernandez

 1-6     Alderete, this beloved young man was known for his warm and

 1-7     generous nature; as a student at Lanier High School, he excelled at

 1-8     his studies while still finding time to pursue such diverse

 1-9     extracurricular activities as football and chess, and after his

1-10     graduation in 1993, he enrolled at St. Phillips College; and

1-11           WHEREAS, In preparation for his career ambitions to attend

1-12     law school and run for public office, Mr. Alderete focused his

1-13     studies on political science; he balanced his academic instruction

1-14     with hands-on experience, working on political campaigns for U.S.

1-15     Representative Henry B. Gonzalez and several other candidates; and

1-16           WHEREAS, Mr. Alderete passionately believed in equal

1-17     representation for all citizens, and he hoped to one day provide a

1-18     voice for the traditionally overlooked segments of our society; his

1-19     strong belief in grassroots political action was underscored by his

1-20     involvement in Victor Morales's memorable bid for the U.S. Senate,

1-21     and that campaign was undoubtedly a highlight of Mr. Alderete's

1-22     budding career in public service; and

1-23           WHEREAS, Although it is especially painful to say goodbye to

1-24     one so young and full of promise, it is fitting to remember that

 2-1     while Mr. Alderete's time here was brief, his life had a profound

 2-2     impact on those around him, and his unique spirit will surely live

 2-3     on in the hearts and minds of all who were privileged to know him;

 2-4     now, therefore, be it

 2-5           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

 2-6     Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Raul Alderete and

 2-7     extend deepest sympathy to his mother, Oralia Hernandez Alderete,

 2-8     and to all the loved ones and friends of this remarkable young man;

 2-9     and, be it further

2-10           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

2-11     prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas

2-12     House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of

2-13     Raul Alderete.
