R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, On May 15, 1997, San Antonio playwright Sterling

 1-2     Houston was honored by his friends and colleagues in the theater

 1-3     with a tribute dinner and celebration, and this noteworthy event is

 1-4     truly worthy of special praise and recognition; and

 1-5           WHEREAS, A native San Antonian, Mr. Houston honed his talents

 1-6     as a dramatist in New York and San Francisco before returning to

 1-7     his hometown, and although he had intended to retire from theater,

 1-8     his plans took a different turn, much to the delight of San Antonio

 1-9     theatergoers; and

1-10           WHEREAS, During his career in the Alamo City,  Mr. Houston

1-11     has established himself as a playwright of great ability and

1-12     versatility, exploring a wide range of themes in such acclaimed

1-13     plays as A Brief History of American Song, Black Lily, White Lily,

1-14     Isis in Nubia, and his most recent success, The Alien Show: Kool

1-15     Jams '99; and

1-16           WHEREAS, Mr. Houston serves as artistic director and

1-17     playwright-in-residence at Jump-Start Performance Company, and his

1-18     fruitful collaboration with this talented group of dramatic artists

1-19     has brought new snap and savor to the city's theater scene; and

1-20           WHEREAS, The artists who strive to remind us of the endless

1-21     possibilities of the world around us are indeed deserving of our

1-22     admiration and gratitude, and it is fitting on this occasion to

1-23     honor Sterling Houston for his many remarkable contributions to his

1-24     fellow Texans; now, therefore, be it

 2-1           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

 2-2     Legislature hereby honor Sterling Houston for his accomplishments

 2-3     in the theater and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued

 2-4     success and happiness in the years to come; and, be it further

 2-5           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

 2-6     prepared for Mr. Houston as an expression of high regard by the

 2-7     Texas House of Representatives.
