R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, The Lone Star State is known around the globe both

 1-2     for its rich and varied musical heritage and for the many legendary

 1-3     musicians who call the state home, and the members of the

 1-4     Waxahachie High School Jazz Ensemble have contributed to this proud

 1-5     tradition with their recent showing in The University of Texas at

 1-6     Arlington Jazz Festival; and

 1-7           WHEREAS, Honored as the outstanding band of the festival, the

 1-8     group's victory is all the more remarkable for the fact that the 4A

 1-9     school competed in the 5A category, going head to head against

1-10     bands from larger cities such as Plano and Arlington, and their

1-11     achievement marks the first time in the competition's history that

1-12     a 4A band took top honors in the 5A class; and

1-13           WHEREAS, The members of the Waxahachie High School Jazz

1-14     Ensemble II also made a strong impression among larger schools,

1-15     taking second place in the 5A second band category; and

1-16           WHEREAS, The excellence of the Waxahachie High School Jazz

1-17     Ensemble has been further recognized with an invitation to perform

1-18     in the 31st Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, an honor

1-19     accorded only 35 high school and college bands in the United

1-20     States; and

1-21           WHEREAS, One of the most prestigious events of its kind in

1-22     the world, the Montreux Jazz Festival is well-known for the

1-23     excellence of its musical offerings, and an invitation to play at

1-24     the festival is indeed an auspicious distinction for these talented

 2-1     young musicians; and

 2-2           WHEREAS, The demanding discipline of jazz requires not only

 2-3     rigorous technical proficiency but also the vigorous creative

 2-4     inspiration of the true artist, and the members of the Waxahachie

 2-5     High School Jazz Ensemble have demonstrated both of these qualities

 2-6     in their outstanding work together; in so doing, they have expanded

 2-7     their own artistic horizons even as they have enriched and

 2-8     enlivened their cultural community, and their remarkable

 2-9     accomplishments are indeed worthy of special praise and recognition

2-10     at this time; now, therefore, be it

2-11           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

2-12     Legislature hereby congratulate the members of the Waxahachie High

2-13     School jazz ensembles on their performance at The University of

2-14     Texas at Arlington Jazz Festival and extend to them sincere best

2-15     wishes for continued success in the years to come; and, be it

2-16     further

2-17           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

2-18     prepared for display at Waxahachie High School as an expression of

2-19     high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
