                                 R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, On May 24, 1997, Mary Carroll High School

 1-2     Valedictorian Jose Alejandro Longoria of Corpus Christi will

 1-3     address his classmates at the school's 1997 commencement ceremony,

 1-4     and this occasion is truly deserving of special legislative

 1-5     recognition; and

 1-6           WHEREAS, Earning the right to call oneself "valedictorian"

 1-7     requires not only intellect and aptitude, but four years of

 1-8     dedication to the highest academic standards; the valedictorian

 1-9     must display a firm understanding of the entire curriculum, from

1-10     math and science to language arts to social studies, while

1-11     demonstrating an unwavering commitment to education; and

1-12           WHEREAS, Mr. Longoria's tradition of outstanding academic

1-13     performance began in middle school, where he made the "A" Honor

1-14     Roll for three consecutive years; he continued to build on this

1-15     foundation of excellence in high school, finishing his career with

1-16     a remarkable 108.7505 grade point average; and

1-17           WHEREAS, The vice president of the National Honor Society and

1-18     the president of Los Emperadores National Spanish Honor Society,

1-19     this commendable young man is also a noted athlete who lettered in

1-20     both football and track and served as captain of the football team;

1-21     in addition, he has devoted a great deal of his free time as a

1-22     volunteer at the Corpus Christi State School and the Columbia

1-23     Doctors Regional Hospital Emergency Room; and

1-24           WHEREAS, Mr. Longoria has earned the respect and admiration

 2-1     of his friends and classmates at Mary Carroll High School, and as

 2-2     he presents his hopes for the future in his valedictory address, he

 2-3     will no doubt inspire his fellow graduates to recognize and

 2-4     appreciate the many possibilities available to them as they begin

 2-5     this exciting new chapter in their lives; and

 2-6           WHEREAS, Mr. Longoria will be attending Harvard University in

 2-7     the fall semester of this year, and as a member of that renowned

 2-8     institution's student body he will surely continue the tradition of

 2-9     achievement and civic activism that he has established at Mary

2-10     Carroll High School; now, therefore, be it

2-11           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

2-12     Legislature hereby congratulate Jose Alejandro Longoria on being

2-13     named Mary Carroll High School's 1997 valedictorian and wish him

2-14     well in all his future endeavors; and, be it further

2-15           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

2-16     prepared for Mr. Longoria as an expression of high regard by the

2-17     Texas House of Representatives.
