R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, On April 30, 1997, Jerry M. Carlson retired from his 1-2 position as IBM senior state executive, and the members of this 1-3 chamber are proud to recognize his many years of service to this 1-4 company and to the community; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Mr. Carlson has held this important position since 1-6 1986, a period in which the manufacturing and development work 1-7 performed by IBM in Austin has made it one of the largest and most 1-8 stable facilities within the company; in addition, he has worked 1-9 diligently to maintain IBM's support of civic and charitable 1-10 activities in Central Texas; and 1-11 WHEREAS, During his tenure with IBM Corporation, the company 1-12 has received many awards as a result of Mr. Carlson's leadership, 1-13 including the Voluntary Protection Program Star Designation 1-14 conferred by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the 1-15 U.S. Department of Labor LIFT America Award, the IBM Chairman's 1-16 Award for Environmental Excellence, and a U.S. Presidential 1-17 Citation for IBM Austin's sponsorship of the Science Academy's 1-18 advisory board; and 1-19 WHEREAS, Since becoming a resident of Austin, this dedicated 1-20 individual has devoted a great deal of time to many elected and 1-21 volunteer positions in the community, serving as vice president of 1-22 the Austin Independent School District Board of Trustees, board 1-23 member and vice chairman of the University of Texas College of 1-24 Education Foundation Advisory Council, president of the Project A+ 2-1 Executive Board, and member of the executive board of KLRU; and 2-2 WHEREAS, In 1992, Mr. Carlson was named "Austinite of the 2-3 Year" by the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce, and his continued 2-4 work toward improving educational opportunities for Austin's 2-5 citizens is truly exemplary; and 2-6 WHEREAS, Jerry M. Carlson's dedication and commitment to 2-7 excellence in behalf of others have inspired countless individuals, 2-8 and his outstanding record of service during his years with IBM 2-9 Austin is to be commended; now, therefore, be it 2-10 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas 2-11 Legislature hereby congratulate Jerry M. Carlson on the occasion of 2-12 his retirement from IBM Corporation and extend to him sincere best 2-13 wishes for continued success and happiness in all his future 2-14 endeavors; and, be it further 2-15 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-16 prepared for Mr. Carlson as an expression of high regard by the 2-17 Texas House of Representatives.
