R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Texas is internationally known as one of the world's 1-2 preeminent centers of space exploration, and the aerospace industry 1-3 has established itself as an integral aspect of the history, 1-4 economy, and culture of the state; and 1-5 WHEREAS, In 1961 President John F. Kennedy confronted his 1-6 fellow Americans with the challenge of landing a human being on the 1-7 moon before the decade's end, and the nation's imagination was 1-8 captured by the sweep and daring of this ambitious venture; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Eight years later, astronaut Neil Armstrong became 1-10 the first man to walk the surface of the moon, and this historic 1-11 achievement was eloquent testimony to the steadfast dedication and 1-12 remarkable skill of the men and women of the National Aeronautics 1-13 and Space Administration (NASA); and 1-14 WHEREAS, Since that time, Americans have continued to explore 1-15 outer space, testing the limits of human possibility even as they 1-16 make immeasurable contributions to our understanding of the 1-17 universe, and NASA's Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston has 1-18 remained at the forefront of this essential endeavor; and 1-19 WHEREAS, A vital element of the Lone Star State's stature as 1-20 an international business mecca, the aerospace industry has also 1-21 been responsible for a number of the technological advances that 1-22 have shaped modern civilization and enriched our lives; and 1-23 WHEREAS, The history of modern Texas is inextricably entwined 1-24 with that of the aerospace industry, and it is indeed fitting at 2-1 this time to recognize this crucial component of the state's 2-2 security and prosperity; now, therefore, be it 2-3 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas 2-4 Legislature hereby recognize May 25-31, 1997, as Texas Space and 2-5 Technology Week and extend to all those involved in the aerospace 2-6 industry sincere best wishes for continued success in the years to 2-7 come.
