R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to
1-2 welcome The University of Texas at Dallas' (UTD) Academic Quiz Team
1-3 to the State Capitol; and
1-4 WHEREAS, In April, the 14 members of this team competed at
1-5 the 1997 National College Bowl Tournament as one of the top 16
1-6 teams in the country; UTD placed a strong sixth in the tournament,
1-7 behind such renowned institutions of higher education as Cornell
1-8 University, the University of Chicago, and Harvard University; and
1-9 WHEREAS, Team members include Eileen Miller, Ryan Wylie,
1-10 Matthew Scheffrahn, Chris Friede, Kathy Blazek, Christopher Kane,
1-11 Rachael Zaspel, Leilani Cantu, Doug Hackworth, Matthew Akins, Jacob
1-12 Gurwitz, Jennifer Kerr, Drew Wallace, and Robert Margolis, who was
1-13 selected for the Tournament All-Stars Game; the team's class range
1-14 runs the gamut from freshmen to graduate students, and their fields
1-15 of study include arts and humanities, natural and social sciences,
1-16 general studies, management, and engineering; and
1-17 WHEREAS, The brainchild of Associate Provost Lawrence
1-18 Redlinger, the Academic Quiz Team was established during the
1-19 1993-1994 school year; Dr. Redlinger is still very much involved
1-20 with the team, serving both as coach and as faculty advisor, and
1-21 much of the team's great success can be attributed to his capable
1-22 guidance; and
1-23 WHEREAS, The UTD Academic Quiz Team has accomplished much in
1-24 its relatively short existence, consistently defeating its
2-1 competitors on the regional, state, and national levels, and the
2-2 members of this chamber are pleased to encourage this spirit of
2-3 competition in the pursuit of academic excellence; now, therefore,
2-4 be it
2-5 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas
2-6 Legislature hereby welcome the Academic Quiz Team of The University
2-7 of Texas at Dallas and commend its members on their recent success
2-8 at the 1997 National College Bowl Tournament; and, be it further
2-9 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-10 prepared for Dr. Redlinger and the team as an expression of high
2-11 regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
