                                 R E S O L U T I O N

1-1 WHEREAS, The community of Dime Box enjoys a long and

1-2 distinguished history, and it is indeed appropriate that we take

1-3 this opportunity to commemorate the town's many contributions to

 1-4 Lone Star culture; and

1-5 WHEREAS, Located northeast of Giddings in eastern Lee County,

1-6 the community was established in the mid-19th century near Joseph

1-7 S. Brown's sawmill, earning the name Brown's Mill; before the

1-8 establishment of a post office there, carriers travelled between

1-9 that community and Giddings to deliver mail and other necessities,

1-10 and townspeople compensated the carriers by leaving dimes for them

1-11 in a box in Mr. Brown's office; and

1-12 WHEREAS, When Texans began to confuse Brown's Mill with

1-13 Brownsville, residents adopted the name of Dime Box in honor of

1-14 their quaint former delivery system; in 1913, the construction of a

1-15 Southern Pacific Railroad line three miles southeast of the

1-16 original townsite resulted in a move to the town's present

1-17 location; and

1-18 WHEREAS, One of the most well known chapters in the town's

1-19 history unfolded in 1945, when residents earned national prominence

1-20 by becoming the first community in the United States to achieve 100

1-21 percent participation in President Franklin D. Roosevelt's March of

1-22 Dimes campaign; the town truly lived up to its name by completely

1-23 filling a mailbox with money and then shipping the entire box to

1-24 the White House, a feat that earned them a personal phone call of

2-1 congratulations from the president himself; and

2-2 WHEREAS, Today, some 300 Texans are proud to call Dime Box

2-3 home, and one of the town's most prominent citizens is Viola

2-4 Spacek; while she was still in the fifth grade, Ms. Spacek began

2-5 styling her friends' hair during recess, and today she has the

2-6 distinction of running the only beauty parlor in Texas where ladies

2-7 can buy eggs while waiting to have their hair done; and

2-8 WHEREAS, Blessed with a fascinating past and a bright-looking

2-9 future, the community of Dime Box has played a vital role in the

2-10 history, economy, and culture of the Lone Star State, and it is a

2-11 pleasure to recognize the town and its people at this time; now,

2-12 therefore, be it

2-13 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

2-14 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the community of Dime Box and

2-15 extend to its citizens warmest best wishes for a happy and

2-16 prosperous future.
